🌟Alumni Spotlight🌟
Say hello to , Kimberli Lackey, a two-time UNLV College of Education graduate! Kimberli received a bachelor’s in elementary education in 2013 and a master’s in English Language Learning in 2024. She currently teaches at Lunt ES as a first grade teacher and grade level chair.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Kimberli shared a bit about her culture and background with us.
❓Is there a value, tradition, or lesson from your upbringing that you carry with you in your work?
“One of the biggest values I carry into my work as an educator and leader is to never doubt yourself. Sometimes you may only see yourself one way, while the people around you see something in you that you never imagined you could become. I have experienced that in my own life, and it has made me want to be that person for my students and the people I work with. I want them to see possibilities in themselves that they may not see yet.”
❓What is something you would want Latino/Hispanic families to know about education and being successful in it?
“My advice to Latino students pursuing their education or considering a career in education is simple: never give up. We come from a community of hardworking people who have overcome challenges and made sacrifices to create opportunities for the next generation. Work hard, but also learn to work smarter. Ask questions. Advocate for yourself. Take advantage of opportunities, even when they push you outside of your comfort zone.
“You do not have to be the smartest person in the room. You just have to be willing to keep learning, keep trying, and believe that you belong there. Your background and heritage are part of your story, and they can be a source of strength. The sacrifices
made before you helped create the opportunities you have today, and your hard work
can help create even more opportunities for the people who come after you.”

✨Alumni in Action Spotlight✨
This month, we’re highlighting Dr. Jessica Soria! Jess earned her Ph.D. from UNLV College of Education in 2022 in Curriculum & Instruction. She serves as the Director of Communications & Marketing for UNLV Lee Business School. 💼
She shared, “I’ve always believed communications and marketing are forms of teaching and learning. Whether I’m explaining a program, a college initiative, or a faculty member’s research, the goal is the same: make it clearer, more meaningful, and easier for people to connect with.” 🍎
Jess has dual nationality with the U.S. and Spain?

🌟Alumni Spotlight🌟
Say hello to , Dr. Adrian Huerta! Adrian earned his bachelor’s from UNLV College of Education in 2007 in Human Services. He currently serves as Assc. Professor of Education and Population & Public Health Sciences at University of Southern California.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Adrian shared a bit about his culture and background with us.
❓How has your culture, family, or community influenced the educator or leader you are today?
“... I center the rich history of my family and community to positively influence how I act, lead, break down barriers, and pave pathways for others to succeed in higher education.”
❓What does the representation of Latino and Hispanic professionals in education mean to you?
“Currently, 1 in 3 Nevada residents are Latinos. So, having Latino educators showcasing a positive example to the next generation of K-12 and college students is important, not only for Latino students, but for all students, so they can change their views on who Latinos are, where Latinos work, and Latinos’ positive impact in classrooms, schools, and beyond. …”
❓Was there a person, organization, or experience at UNLV that helped you feel supported, connected, or represented?
“I would not be where I am without the support from many people and groups who helped me succeed: academic advisors, mentors, student orgs including MEChA de UNLV, CSUN Student Government, the Black Student Organization, Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers, and faculty members. I found community; at one point, I felt lost and confused about where I was going for a while. But being active during my five years at UNLV helped me find my crew, and I still have relationships with them today.”
❓What is something about your heritage or community that you are especially proud to carry forward?
“I am proud of who I am and what I achieved, and my family’s legacy continues to guide my personal and professional decision-making. Now, as a father, I think about which values and lessons from my community I share with my children, the responsibility we carry to positively impact our community, and the importance of earning advanced degrees.”

To earn multiple college degrees shows perseverance and determination. To earn them at one university is remarkable. And yet, to earn them from the same college within that university is even more unique! 🦄
In this month’s ✨ Three Degrees from COE ✨ spotlight, we’re spotlighting 3x UNLV College of Education alum, Dr. Marissa Nichols! Marissa serves as Senior Associate Athletics Director at Cal Bears.
Marissa’s degrees:
🎓 2008 B.S. Human Services
🎓 2010 M.Ed. School Counseling
🎓 2017 Ph.D. Higher Education
Among her favorite UNLV memories? “I had the privilege of co-teaching an athletics administration graduate course alongside my mentor who opened this door for me, Dr. Nancy Lough—and learning research and statistics from the brilliant Dr. Alice Corkill--two women who shaped not just how I think, but who I am.” 🫱🏽‍🫲🏽
“A career highlight has been stepping into inaugural roles—positions where the blueprint didn't exist yet. Those experiences taught me something important about myself: I'm a builder. There's something deeply energizing about creating structure from scratch, earning trust, and watching a vision become a system that genuinely changes lives. That's the work that sticks with me.” 🔨
“My 'why' is rooted in a simple belief: when you develop the whole person, you unlock human potential and performance. I'm motivated by the opportunity to build systems that transform college sport from the inside—creating environments where student-athletes, coaches, and programs don't just succeed, but truly flourish.” 📈

Today we’re highlighting Alize Jones from the Great Lakes and Wolverine State of Michigan! 🚤 Alize graduated from UNLV College of Education in 2021 after completing a Master’s of Education in Elementary Education.
