Surreal times.

Having the immense honor of speaking at the Sports for Peace Gala in Paris as part of the Olympic Games. In addition to sharing some of my story and how to become the Greatest Version of Yourself, I was also surprised by being honored with the Sport for Peace International Award for 'Inspiring and Saving Lives'. At the end of the night we took a nice group shot. Phelps Michael . A highlight was meeting Her Excellency and the Ukraine Womens Rowing Team.

Who knew? 🤷🏼‍♂️❤️

May 28th - On This Day in BC Sport History: 1989

Victoria-raised Simon Keith becomes the first athlete to play professional sports after undergoing a heart transplant, coming on in the second half of a scoreless draw between the Canadian Soccer League's Victoria Vistas (making their CSL debut) and the Winnipeg Fury. Keith would play two seasons in the CSL with the Vistas, Montreal Supra, and Fury, as well as the Cleveland Crunch of the Major Indoor Soccer League. In 1986, Keith received a heart transplant, the donor being 17 year old Jonathan Edward, from Newport, Wales, who had died while playing soccer. He remains one of the longest living heart transplant recipients and was awarded the Order of Canada in 2022. His Foundation has raised millions of dollars for organ donation awareness and supporting families of those whose members are in need or have undergone transplants. In 2019 he received a second successful heart transplant.

There has been a ‘dirty little secret’ in the US Organ Donation World, and now it is being exposed. A little complicated for the general public, but there HAVE been some bad actors (read: some organ procurement organizations ) in the space blatantly manipulating a loophole in the metrics that are used to evaluate performance. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services provides oversight of the OPO’s, and a ‘pancreata for research’ loophole found its way into the regulations that govern these OPO’s. This loophole provides an opportunity for some (OPO’s) to manipulate their results by increasing the recovery (of pancreata) by hundreds sometimes thousands of percent year over year. (And yes, I have seen and studied the data).

I, for one, am SHOCKED that some leaders in the OPO space 1. Still have jobs leading this incredible life saving work and 2. Can look at themselves in the mirror.

Putting your own self interests ahead of actually doing the work and playing ‘ethically and morally’ by the rules should be a given.

The OPO’s in the United States continue to face ‘reputational criticism’ and continue to be under fire. Is it any wonder when there is such blatant disregard to act morally and ethically.

Color me disgusted.

And…..here is the raw data….

Really….do the math….
