At the Illipah Youth Expo, kids got their hands dirty the right way—sifting soil for hidden coins, learning the basics of trapping, and discovering how patience, skill, and hard work pay off. This is how conservation is passed on: one lesson, one kid, one memory at a time.

Sometimes conservation looks glamorous… and sometimes it’s three guys wedged inside a tank covered in mud, rust, and God-knows-what, wrestling uprights into place so wildlife has water when the desert turns mean.

That’s the part folks don’t see — the hard, dirty work that keeps a guzzler alive. Sweat, scraped knuckles, and a whole lot of stubbornness. But that’s the price of caring about wild places. And it’s worth every miserable minute.

Out in the marsh with two young kids today—BB guns, big smiles, and lessons that matter. At WHIN, this is where future conservationists are made. Not by shooting ducks, but by teaching safety, respect, and how to read the wild the right way.

One morning like this can shape a lifetime.

Out on a project you always catch something cool—fresh tracks, a bird working the ridge, some little wild moment most folks never get to see. That’s the trade-off for the hard work: the land shows you why it’s worth it.

Up at McFarland Springs this weekend with the crew from Wildlife Habitat Improvement of Nevada, we tore out the old fence line and built a new spring fence to give the area — and the wildlife that use it — a fighting chance.

Hard work, no glamour: posts in the ground, wire tight, lunch on the tailgate, and the kind of conversation that only happens after a few hours of sweat and shared purpose.

We left the place a little better than we found it. That’s conservation in its truest form.
