Empowerment comes from within, while power is often tied to authority, structure, or position. In the performing arts, power is usually expressed through larger formations, leading roles, strong dynamics, or control over space and movement, especially within an ensemble. Empowerment, however, shows up through authenticity, confidence, and personal truth, even in subtle or quiet moments. When performers rely on inner empowerment rather than external power, their work feels more genuine and relatable. True empowerment doesn’t ask permission — it is felt, shared, and enduring, leaving a lasting impact on both the performer and the audience.

I truly believe the Performing Arts is a gentle way to spark social change. I remember a long time ago when I performed "The Black Cobra" which was a sub story in the story, a woman in the audience later told me how empowered she felt by watching the show. She said it was encouraging and empowering. The story was about the relationship between a man and a woman; where the woman played/danced by yours truly as the serpent and the man a snake charmer played/danced with Anthony Prime Guerra.

Courage and determination go a long way; when I decided “No culture or society can dictate what I can or cannot do”. Being born Christian in a Muslim Middle Eastern country, it was a taboo to dance in public. Although I came to North America as a teenager the cultural rules and regulations followed me. I started a financial consulting practice in my 20’s and decided to perform in public against the cultural rules after I established myself as a financial consultant – so I could hide behind my career. Although I was still running a successful financial consulting business, twenty years ago I ‘married my dance’ – that is when I started our first dance theatre production in 2006 😊 The rest is history.
