End of Watch: Tuesday, October 11, 1988

Officer Marc Alan Kahre joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department as a cadet on October 2, 1973, and was commissioned as a police officer in 1975.

While on patrol on October 11, 1988, Officer Kahre saw a vehicle driven by a suspect who had earlier fired several gunshots through his former girlfriend’s front door. The suspect stopped abruptly, exited the vehicle and opened fire on Officer Kahre, who was riding his motorcycle. Officer Kahre was fatally wounded. He was 34.

End of Watch: Sunday, October 8, 1967

Sergeant Paul DeWeert joined the Las Vegas Police Department in January 1948 and was known by his fellow officers as “Pappy.” A drunk ex-convict shot the unarmed 20-year police veteran at a dark North Las Vegas intersection. Sergeant DeWeert was 60.

End of Watch: Thursday, October 8, 2009

Officer Milburn “Milli” Wilbur Beitel III joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on September 30, 2003, following four years of distinguished service in the United States Marine Corps. Officer Beitel was dedicated to serving both his community and his country.

During the late evening of October 7, 2009, Officer Beitel’s patrol vehicle overturned after he swerved to avoid another vehicle. He was ejected and sustained fatal injuries. Officer Beitel died from his injuries on October 8, 2009. He was 30.

Officer Charleston Vernon Hartfield joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on January 18, 2006. He worked in the Patrol Division until 2015, when he transferred to the Project Management and Video Bureau. During his 11 years with LVMPD, Officer Hartfield helped develop a memorial wall honoring fallen officers at Southeast Area Command. He also authored his first book about his life as a police officer.

Officer Hartfield was a decorated U.S. Army combat veteran who served for 16 years. In 2003, he served with the 82nd Airborne Division in Iraq. At the time of his death, he was serving as a first sergeant with the Nevada Army National Guard’s 100th Quartermaster Company.

On October 1, 2017, Officer Hartfield was attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas with his wife when a gunman opened fire. Although off duty, Officer Hartfield took action to help rescue others. He was shot and died at the scene. He was 34 years old.

End of Watch: Tuesday, September 28, 2021

Officer Edward Contreras joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on July 18, 2006, after proudly serving in the United States Marine Corps. He was a combat veteran who served in Somalia and Iraq before beginning his law enforcement career.

During his early years with LVMPD, he worked as a patrol officer at South Central Area Command and Convention Center Area Command before transferring to the Traffic Bureau. He spent the remainder of his LVMPD career in the Traffic Bureau, where his brother, Michael, was also assigned.

Officer Contreras died from complications of COVID-19 on September 28, 2021, cutting short his distinguished 15-year law enforcement career. Outside of work, he enjoyed fishing, woodworking and spending time with his family. Officer Contreras was 50 years old and is survived by his wife, Stephanie, and his son, Aaron.

End of Watch: Tuesday, September 18, 1928

Deputy Sheriff John T. Allen was commissioned by Clark County Sheriff Sam Gay in the summer of 1928. Deputy Allen lived in Logandale, Nevada, and traveled to Las Vegas to report the theft of 14 horses by two individuals. Arrest warrants were issued, and Allen was authorized to apprehend the suspects.

Deputy Allen arrested one of the two suspects and brought him to Las Vegas for booking. The suspect was later released and traveled to Pakoon Springs, Arizona, historically known as Pahcoon. He encountered Deputy Allen there on September 18, 1928.

During the encounter, Deputy Allen was beaten and shot. He died at the scene. The suspect claimed that Deputy Allen fired at him first. He was tried for Deputy Allen’s death and acquitted.

Deputy Allen was 61 years old.
