SPEAR Championing social, civic, cultural, economic, and educational advancement for marginalized and underserved families and communities.

This mission is actualized through on-ground community services, public education, advocacy, and social science research. As a registered 501(c)3 organization, SPEAR seeks funding sources and provides technical assistance on program management and development. By providing fiscal sponsorship, the Foundation increases the availability of resources to local chapters and community based organizations

(CBOs) so that they can design and administer effective programs for the community. SPEAR has prepared the SPEAR Guide Book as a resource for chapters and CBOs. It provides them with an outline of the processes involved in acquiring additional funding sources and collaborative partnerships necessary for the transition of a successful project into an extended program. The SPEAR Guide Book encourages creativity and programmatic planning beyond current resources —more specifically, it inspires programs to consider what services could be provided if more funding were available and what kinds of programs are needed in the community. SPEAR looks forward to fulfilling its mission to provide civic, economic, and educational progress of vulnerable families, and communities. At SPEAR, we strive to increase access to granting agencies, foster community innovation and improvement, and encourage nonprofit sector experimentation. We extend full legal, corporate and financial sponsorship to the projects we support.

✨ Welcome Our New Training & Development Committee Chair — Shavonyuette Dotson, MPA! ✨

The SPEAR Foundation is excited to announce the appointment of Shavonyuette Dotson, MPA as our new Training & Development Committee Chair!

A dynamic national facilitator, consultant, and leader in youth development and social-emotional learning (SEL), Shavonyuette brings extensive experience designing and leading high-impact trainings that strengthen staff practices, build emotionally aware leaders, and improve outcomes for young people. She has facilitated workshops at national conferences, developed engaging curricula, and coached leaders to turn strategy into impact. Known for creating transformative learning experiences that are practical, engaging, and grounded in real-world application, she empowers individuals and organizations to lead with intention, build authentic connections, and create lasting, community-centered impact.

As Training & Development Committee Chair, Shavonyuette will lead the design and implementation of SPEAR’s training and development strategy, ensuring alignment with the Foundation’s mission and strategic priorities. She will oversee committee recruitment and collaboration, develop and deliver professional development for the Board of Directors, and partner with program and regional leaders to curate impactful, culturally relevant trainings across SPEAR’s footprint - nationally and internationally. Her work will also include establishing systems for tracking participation, measuring impact, and using data to continuously strengthen SPEAR’s learning offerings and overall effectiveness.

Her deep expertise in facilitation, leadership development, and systems-building aligns seamlessly with SPEAR’s mission to advance social, educational, and economic empowerment through education, advocacy, and research-driven solutions.

We are thrilled to welcome Shavonyuette’s leadership as we continue to build and expand SPEAR’s Training & Development work!

✨ SPEAR in Action: From Learning to Measurable Impact ✨

As we close out the month of March, the SPEAR Foundation is proud to highlight the impact of this month’s implementation of our “From Challenges to Change” workshop—using improvement science to turn theory into real-world practice.

Delivered at both the National AfterSchool Association (NAA) Convention in Washington D.C. and the Central Region of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Conference in Milwaukee, WI, the workshop engaged 20 participants across both sessions, elevating the “R” in SPEAR by bringing research to life through actionable, equity-centered strategies.

Through tools like the 5 Whys Diagram/Root Cause Analysis, and PDSA cycles, participants moved beyond surface-level challenges to identify meaningful change ideas they can test and learn from over a 30-day period.

📊 The Impact (Pre/Post Survey Data)
• Increased readiness to apply improvement science
NAA: 3.00 → 4.25
Central Region: 2.67 → 4.00
• 5/5 ratings on relevance, clarity, and usefulness
• Immediate application—participants are already using these tools within their programs and chapters

Participants left with clearer root causes, structured approaches, and defined next steps to strengthen engagement, leadership, and program outcomes.

This is how SPEAR advances its mission—through capacity-building that leads to action, ownership, and sustained change.💫

📈 What’s Next
Scaling this work through upcoming convenings and an upcoming SPEAR White Paper to share insights and strategies with the broader field.
