Damnation Seize My Soul!

On this day in 1718, infamous pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, was killed in battle near Ocracoke Island in North Carolina.

Having hunted the pirates for a solid week, a small force of British Navy men under Lt. James Maynard - acting as agents of Virginia Governor Alexander Spottswood - finally located and attacked Teach's ship the Adventure.

A short verbal exchange between the pirate captain and the lieutenant ended with Blackbeard's oath of challenge: "Damnation seize my Soul if I give you Quarters, or take any from you!" Following a broadside from the pirate ship that killed nearly half of Maynard's men, both of the Navy vessels grounded on sandbars in the shallow inlet.

Maynard's ship was quickly boarded by Blackbeard and a handful of his crew. Close combat ensued between Maynard and Teach. Standing over six feet tall and fighting like a Viking berserker, Blackbeard broke the lieutenant's sword in half and appeared likely to triumph when one of Maynard's men slashed his neck with a cutlass from behind.

The pirate fought on but was eventually brought down - having been shot five times and slashed by sword no less than twenty.

Blackbeard's head was cut off and hung from the bowsprit of Maynard's ship - dangling like a trophy as they sailed into harbor - as proof they had indeed dispatched the notorious pirate.

Blackbeard's body was thrown overboard and it is said that the headless co**se swam three times around the ship (counter-clockwise no less) before finally sinking...into the abyss.

New Year's Day of "The Dragon"

On this day in 1586, British explorer and privateer Sir Francis Drake - known to the Spanish as "El Draque" ("The Dragon") - attacked and captured the port city of Santo Domingo on the island of Hispaniola with a force of 23 ships and more than 2,000 soldiers.

Drake's men occupied the city for a month, plundering and looting it of anything with value before collecting an additional ransom of 25,000 gold ducats (approximately $200,000 by today's standards) and sailing on February 1st.
