A former Habitat for Humanity executive director will spend more than 62 years in prison after authorities say she embezzled about $826,000 from the nonprofit’s local chapter.

Karen Marie Northcutt, 62, was convicted of multiple charges, including fraudulent schemes, theft, money laundering and trafficking in stolen property, according to the Yavapai County Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors said the money was meant to help families in need access safe, affordable housing.

“Her actions are despicable,” Yavapai County Attorney Dennis McGrane said, adding that the sentence should send a strong message that fraud and theft will be “vigorously prosecuted.”
