Menstrual Hygiene Day was founded in 2014 to break the silence, stigma, and barriers surrounding menstruation. Celebrated every year on May 28th, the date represents the average menstrual cycle: 28 days and 5 days of bleeding.

But this day is about more than awareness. It’s about action. Millions of people around the world still lack access to period products, clean water, education, and safe spaces to manage their periods with dignity.

Period poverty impacts health, education, confidence, and opportunity.

At Project Marilyn, we believe period supplies are not luxuries. They are necessities. And together we can help create a world where no one is held back because of a period.

We have so many incredible volunteers who walk through our doors each week that if you blink, you might miss them.

Their time with us may only last a few hours, but the impact they leave on our hearts and in our community lasts so much longer than their volunteer shift ever could.

Every kit packed, every box moved, every conversation shared becomes part of something bigger. It increases access and creates dignity for those who need it most.

Confused? Us too.

When conversations around ending period poverty start including shampoo, soap, and deodorant, it can sometimes blur the message. Those items absolutely matter and are important to overall health and hygiene, but they address different needs.

Because menstruation is still a topic that carries stigma and misunderstanding, it’s important that we continue creating clarity around the mission.

Period poverty is the lack of access to period products, adequate hygiene facilities, and education surrounding menstruation.

The clearer we are about the issue, the stronger our collective impact can be.
