Conservation District of Southern Nevada K - 12 Student Conservation Hero of the Year Award Program: 2022 - 2023

The Conservation District of Southern Nevada (CDSN) is announcing establishment of a K - 12 Student Conservation Hero of the Year Award Program (“Program”).

This Program is open for any public, private, or home-schooled student, student group, class, or school (“Student”) in grades K - 12 in Clark County, Nevada.

The Program award will be based on the Student’s conservation, preservation, or sustainability (“Conservation”)-oriented efforts for the Program period: May 2022 - April 2023. This Program period is to allow Students the opportunity to start or have efforts over the summer break. The CDSN intends to make this an annual Program.
The Conservation-oriented efforts may be anything from a single instance to a continuing effort.

Nominations will be accepted from any student, individual, teacher or school administrator.

Nomination is simple, just submit your name and contact information (including email), the Student(s) name(s), grade(s) and school(s), and contact information, and a short (approximately two-page) description indicating what the Student’s Conservation-oriented efforts have been for the award period and the impact that has had or may have on Conservation or Conservation efforts. Illustrations, diagrams, photographs, etc. may also be included - these are in addition to the short description.

A student (or parent/guardian for students under the age of 18) signature and contact information (including email) is needed for individual student efforts, and a teacher, appropriate school administrator, or other appropriate signature and contact information (including email) is needed for student group, class, or school efforts.

Submit nominations to [email protected] on or before April 30, 2023. The CDSN will contact you if any additional information is needed.

Awards will be based on grade-level, innovation, Conservation principles, actual or estimated Conservation impact, and the quality and completeness of the nomination.

The CDSN will review all nominations for the award period and it is planned that the award will be announced at a Conservation District of Southern Nevada Student Conservation Hero of the Year Award Program dinner or other event prior to the end of the school year.

The Student awardee will be given a TBD award and their Conservation efforts will be highlighted on the CDSN website (CDSN.org) and other social media.

Awards are solely at the discretion of the CDSN, the CDSN decision is final, and the CDSN may opt to not make an award or to make multiple awards.

The CDSN may solicit for sponsors for the Program.
Additional information and details may be found at http://www.cdsn.org/student-conservation-hero-program.html.

Announcement for nominations for this Program will also be made through the CDSN website and other CDSN social media.
Please email any questions to [email protected].

2021 Poster Contest “Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities"

The CDSN wants to thank the students from Virgin Valley High School for their 3 submissions for the contest and the students from Explore Knowledge Academy for their 16 submissions.

The CDSN selected the poster from Sonya Portillo from Explore Knowledge Academy as the Grade 9 entry to the Nevada State Association of Conservation Districts' poster contest and the poster from Katrina Muscat, also from Explore Knowledge Academy, as the Grade 10 entry to the Nevada State Association of Conservation Disticts' poster contest.

See photos below.

The CDSN awarded both students with Amazon gift cards.

Katrina’s poster was also selected by the NvACD as Nevada's Grade 10 entry to the National Association of Conservation Districts Poster Contest (which I think was a first for the CDSN) and she also received a check from the NvACD.

The CDSN also awarded an Amazon Gift Certificate to Tamara Kinosh*ta - the teacher coordinating the efforts for Explore Knowledge Academy.

The CDSN is looking forward to many more great entries for the 2022 Poster Contest "Healthy Soil, Healthy Life." Details will be posted at the beginning of the 2022 - 2023 school year.
