Time to test your winter dendro! This tree has an alternate arrangement, with simple leaves and bristle tips. The twigs are fuzzy with large buds. The bark is dark gray to black, and the inner bark is bright orange and has a bitter taste. This tree is common across Eastern United States, and is found in dry sites and ridges with acidic soils. 🌲❄️KTSAF Winter Meeting Recap!🎉🌳

KTSAF Winter Meeting 2026 was a blast! This year we visited Lexington, KY, to hold the annual student quiz bowl, auction off some cool forestry merchandise, hear about the newest forestry research, and give awards to some outstanding KTSAF members!

We celebrated 50 years of membership, recognized the Herman Baggenstoss Forestry Award family recipient, and awarded KTSAF scholarships to great forestry students. Hope to see you next year!

Time to test your winter dendro! This tree is deciduous, with oppositely arranged twigs that are square-shaped and winged. This “weed” is an invasive species native to Asia, and can be found throughout Kentucky and Tennessee. It is evergreen with opposite, glossy leaves.
