Illegal dog and cat breeding doesn't pay. Sometimes the breeder pays instead. Las Year Clark County APS collected nearly $400,000 in citations much of that from illegal breeders. Spread the word, crime doesn't pay.

We have heard of pet owners being turned away by Metro PD substations when they want to report a stolen pet. The technicians will often say, "sorry, it is a civil matter, file at the courthouse." We recently met with a Metro Lieutenant regarding this practice and he agrees that is an incorrect response. As long as one can prove a monetary value to the pet (adoption fee, vet care paid, etc), than it falls under NRS 205, property crime and specficially theft. A stolen pet is no different than a stolen Rolex. If you get pushback at a substation, insist that you want to file a report under NRS 205 theft of property. The caveat to this, is you must have some kind of evidence that some particular person is keeping your dog and not just that the dog is lost.

RESCUE BEST PRACTICE ON MICROCHIP REGISTRATION
If you are adopting out a dog/cat that had a previous chip registration and you register it with a different vendor, PLEASE "zero out" the old registration (or better, register it with the same registry). Not doing so can result in the dog not going back to its rightful owner or may end up in the shelter. We see this a few times a month where the chip is registered in multiple places (I have seen as many as four) and with different owners. We will make best efforts to determine the rightful owner but many vet offices will not. We had one today where the vet told the finder, the phone number was out of order. They were looking at an old owner record instead of the correct one. The dog was adopted from a rescue but they left the old registration "out there" with previous owner info. This is not a good practice for Return-To-Owner.

No-kill shelter policies can sometimes have the opposite result. Shelters offload the unadoptables elsewhere and claim they prevented euthanasias. Then the dogs get shot. "No-kill" is complicated.

Folks, spay and neuter your pets. Here are seven puppies coming into our already over-burdened shelter. The community suffers as do the animals when you don't do the right thing.

Rescues and Shelters Be Aware. The Screwworm that is endangering cattle in Texas and now New Mexico can infect ANY warm-blooded animals including dogs and cats. This dangerous pest can migrate to any state at any time. Make sure you have a response and mitigation plan for your organization.

What shelters and rescues need to know about New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax), which was confirmed in South Texas on June 3, 2026, marking its return to the U.S. for the first time since eradication in 1966.
