A 22-unit housing complex has opened its doors to tribal members of the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Reservation. As KNPR’s Jimmy Romo reports, the complex is the latest effort to address the critical housing shortage facing most tribal communities across the state.

Many tribes in the state have a long list of members waiting for the chance to live in an affordable home on the reservation. But distance and lack of infrastructure often create barriers to the development of that housing.

Now there is some relief, at least for one community. The Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Reservation opened 22 new affordable townhouses on May 12.

Russell Dyer-Redner, the Fallon Tribe’s housing program development manager, has overseen the project from start to finish. He says having the new townhouses open for families to move in is an exciting moment.

“It’s a process that’s been years in the making, so we’re just finally starting to see the end right now,” said Dyer-Redner.

The project cost roughly $12 million to complete. Roughly 80% of the project was paid for by the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, and the rest of the funding came from the tribe.

Tribal families that are at or below 50% of the area’s median income are eligible to move into a unit ranging from one to four bedrooms. For Fallon, that’s about $40,000 a year.

Nevada public employees with Parent PLUS loans should be aware of an important July 1, 2026 deadline. ⚠️

Some borrowers working in public service may qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), but Parent PLUS loans must be fully consolidated before July 1, 2026 to maintain eligibility for certain repayment and forgiveness programs. Applications still in processing after the deadline may lose access to these benefits.

With consolidation processing taking 4–8 weeks, borrowers are encouraged to act as soon as possible, while also weighing the pros and cons of consolidation. 💡

Questions or need guidance? Nevada’s Student Loan Ombudsman can help borrowers better understand available options and next steps.
