We’re excited to share that we’ll be at conference hosted by ! Our session will be a round table focused on our research initiatives Usap Tayo, a study on the relationship between politics and Filipino American experience, and Kwentuhan, utilizing precolonial storytelling and community engagement as a research method. In collaboration with and our team of researchers we’re excited to share our findings and discuss how to synthesize academia and community building to document and catalyze progress across the diaspora. Pakikipagkwentuhan is an indigenous method of sharing culture and values through informal dialogue. For the past few years we’ve been working with researchers at the University Wisconsin-Madison to codify ways of recording the experience of Filipinos throughout the diaspora. We hope to bring this technique into the modern day to not only preserve our culture, but to recognize our struggles and highlight our growth into the research space. We’re happy to do this in partnership and inspired by their Balikabayan series, Las Vegas and its Pinoy community is the perfect place to hold this event.

Join us for an evening of free food, sharing stories, and community.

DIWA (inner self, essence) ✨

The recent naming of the new Miss Universe Philippines, .millan.windorski , is one so close to home.

Bea is an alumna of our Filipino Global Mentorship Program, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin (which also houses our initiative Tayo), and was introduced to us at a conference where we were named the community partner.

What really makes Bea’s win feel personal is the driving force behind her decision in moving to the Philippines - her desire to be in and be a part of the very place that shaped so much of her sense of self. Her story is one of several threads which weave the fabric of the Filipino American identity, one that is still evolving. As our istorya within the United States progresses, many Fil Ams feel that their path continues by returning to the motherland.

As one of them, Bea will bring another piece of Filipino American identity to the world stage while carrying the commitment to serve Filipinos in the Philippines.
