Gentle toddler weaning! Love these ideas.

Is weaning on your mind? Here are some gentle ways to encourage your toddler to nurse less and help you move toward weaning.

We suggest this often for babies who need encouragement at the breast.

Sometimes babies need a little extra support to keep feeding!

Breast compressions can help keep the milk flowing when your baby is sucking but not actively drinking. It’s a simple way to encourage more swallowing and help your baby get more milk during a feed.

You can also pair this with switch nursing, moving from one side to the other, to keep your baby engaged and feeding. Small adjustments can make a big difference.

We have been discussing expectations in our monthly meetings. Sometimes expectations don't match reality. You can always reach out to a Leader or come to a meeting if your breastfeeding reality doesn't match your expectations or desires.

It is okay for the plan to change.

Winter can bring shifts in energy, routines, and expectations. Feeding plans can change. Support needs can change. Giving yourself permission to adjust and reach out is always part of the journey.

How to know your baby is ready to eat - BEFORE the crying starts.

How to know your baby is ready to eat - BEFORE the crying starts.

How do you know when to feed your baby if you're not using a schedule? Your baby will show you.

Crying is actually a late hunger cue. Babies give earlier, quieter signals—like moving their hands to their mouth, becoming more alert, or making mouth movements. These subtle signs are your baby’s way of saying, “I’m getting hungry.”

Responding early makes nursing easier for both of you. Waiting until your baby is upset can make it harder for them to latch and feed comfortably.

Watch your baby—not the clock.

A more recent myth that’s been circulating is the idea that you need to wean from breastfeeding once your baby gets teeth. This belief may stem from fears of biting or discomfort as teeth begin to erupt. Rest assured, breastfeeding can continue comfortably long after teeth appear. If you’re experiencing discomfort with latching or have concerns about being bitten, please reach out for support.

She's not wrong.

Breastfeeding slowly takes over everything. Plans get canceled, shirts become optional, and the couch turns into home base. It looks simple, but it’s time consuming, exhausting, and deeply real. If a mom is stuck under a baby right now, this stage is normal and it won’t last forever.
