Philanthropy is changing, from how people give to who gets to participate in giving. What do these shifts mean for nonprofits and the future of fundraising?

At the 2026 Southern Nevada Nonprofit Summit, Private Money: Understanding the Shifts and Doing Philanthropy Differently will explore shifts in charitable giving, the growing concentration of philanthropic dollars, and new approaches that invite communities to play a more active role.

Last week, 29 nonprofit leaders and finance professionals came together for CNAP Essentials, a three-day training designed to strengthen the financial knowledge and skills needed to support healthy, sustainable nonprofit organizations.

Led by nationally recognized experts from BDO participants explored the fundamentals of nonprofit accounting and financial management, from fund accounting and budgeting to internal controls, financial reporting, board oversight, audits and IRS requirements.

Most importantly, participants walked away with the knowledge, skills and best practices to strengthen financial oversight, support compliance, make more informed financial decisions and enhance the fiscal health of their organizations.

Thank you to everyone who invested their time to build stronger financial practices for the organizations they serve, and to United Way of Southern Nevada for hosting us!

📉 Payroll is three weeks away, a $400K payment is 45 days late, and one board member suggests approving a $150K loan by email tonight.

📰 You learn from a press release that your ED signed a three-year sponsorship deal. It's within their authority, but the company has a controversial past.

💬 A new board member brings deep expertise and foundation connections, but can't meet the give-or-get policy. The committee chair says no exceptions.

These are the real boardroom dilemmas our 2026 Get on Board cohort tackled during their Board Leadership in Practice Roundtables.

The cohort rotated through three roundtables focused on financial oversight, the board–Executive Director relationship, and fundraising. Rather than searching for a single 'right' answer, each table fostered honest discussion around nuance, tough decisions, and the tradeoffs board members encounter every day.
