Derrick Ivan O'neal Sickle Cell Foundation

Derrick Ivan O'neal Sickle Cell Foundation This foundation is to give children and teens hope for a better life while living with sickle cell. I was diagnosed at the age of 2 days old.

I am Derrick O'neal who is currently living with Sickle Cell Anemia Disease. I had my first crisis at 5 days old. Majority of my childhood was spent in the hospital. I was put on a chronic transfusion program which was supposed to last for 5 years. I received a blood transfusion every 8 days for 2 and 1/2 years straight. Unfortunately this procedure was not working and I was hospitalized more than

usual. My mother who was a nurse at the time decided to take me off of the program. She then monitored me and gradually took me off all the medications. My mother was told I would only live to the age of 5 years old and I surpassed that. Then, she was told that I would only live until the age of 12. I am now 19 years of age and I am currently thriving as a young man taking it one day at a time. The reason for this foundation is to give children and teens awareness and hope. Any donations received a portion of the proceeds will go to St Jude Children's Hospital.
