When women rise, Nevada rises. ππ7 Things We Learned About Women and girls in Nevada.
The International Women's Forum Nevada had the opportunity to hear from Jill Tolles, CEO of the Kenny Guinn Center for Policy Priorities, about the new Status & Achievement of Women in Nevada report, produced in partnership with the Nevada Womenβs Fund. The report also shows the status of men and boys in Nevada and how they're doing. It's important to notice the mental health statistics on the attached chart.
This is the first comprehensive statewide analysis of its kind in more than two decades. There is a lot to celebrate, along with some important challenges ahead. π
β¨ 1. Women are leading.
Women make up roughly two-thirds of the Nevada Legislature, giving women a powerful voice in shaping our state.
β¨ 2. Women are building businesses.
Women own approximately 41% of Nevada businesses, making a significant contribution to our economy. πΌπ
β¨ 3. Women are succeeding in education.
Women make up nearly 60% of higher-education enrollment and are achieving at every level of education. ππ
But then come the challengesβ¦
βοΈ 4. Education doesn't automatically equal equal pay.
Nevada women working full-time earn about 82.9% of men's median earnings. π°
π 5. Housing and caregiving can put enormous pressure on women and families.
Affordability and the cost of childcare remain significant barriers to financial security. π©βπ§βπ¦
π΅ 6. The challenges can follow women into retirement.
Older women face significant financial-security concerns, including lower retirement income after a lifetime of differences in earnings, caregiving and time in the workforce.
π 7. Safety remains a serious concern.
Intimate-partner violence continues to affect far too many Nevada women.
The big takeaway? Nevada women have made remarkable progress, but progress is not the same as equality.
Thank you, Jill Tolles, and the Kenny Guinn Center for giving us the data we need to understand where women are thriving and where we still have work to do. And thank you to the Nevada Womenβs Fund for helping bring this important research to Nevada.
