Right?!?!?
Most of us have seen a traffic sign like this: too much text, too far from the decision point, on a road built to feel comfortable at 40 mph.
Then we wonder why people don’t slow down.
In most parts of life, we design systems to prevent predictable mistakes. Your microwave shuts off when the door opens. Your car won’t let you pull the keys unless it’s in park. Guardrails exist for a reason.
But on many roads (Stroads, really), especially around schools, we build wide, forgiving roads and rely on signs to do all the work.
If we’re serious about safety, the street itself should make slower driving feel natural.
What’s a place in your community where the design and the behavior being asked of people clearly don’t match?
