Driving too fast can distract and influence the perspective of the person behind the wheel in and of itself. Additionally, even small increments in speed can make a huge difference in the danger to vulnerable road users!

Summer has notoriously become known as the "100 Deadliest Days" for teen drivers. Parents play a key role in ensuring their teen drivers' safety by staying engaged in their driving habits and reinforcing safe practices:

📵 Avoid Distractions
đźš Avoid Substances
đźš— Avoid driving with extra passengers
🚦 Buckle Up
💤 Don’t drive drowsy
🏎️ Slow Down

Right?!?!?

Right?!?!?

Most of us have seen a traffic sign like this: too much text, too far from the decision point, on a road built to feel comfortable at 40 mph.

Then we wonder why people don’t slow down.

In most parts of life, we design systems to prevent predictable mistakes. Your microwave shuts off when the door opens. Your car won’t let you pull the keys unless it’s in park. Guardrails exist for a reason.

But on many roads (Stroads, really), especially around schools, we build wide, forgiving roads and rely on signs to do all the work.

If we’re serious about safety, the street itself should make slower driving feel natural.

What’s a place in your community where the design and the behavior being asked of people clearly don’t match?

Motorcycles are smaller and harder to spot in your mirrors, especially in heavy traffic or low light. Take the extra second to adjust your mirrors and check your blind spots, and then check again. That second look could save a life.

Parents - your kids are watching! Teens consistently report that parents influence their driving behaviors more than anyone else.

Model the behaviors you want your teen to follow – buckling up, avoiding distractions, following speed limits, and never driving impaired.

Motorcyclists don’t always slow down using the brakes, so you may not see brake lights. Allow more following distance behind motorcycles and always watch for changes in traffic!
