A special moment at the Po’pay Mural Unveiling at Mesquite Art Gallery. ❤️

This gathering brought together art, history, culture and community as we celebrated the Po’pay mural and the mission of Murals With A Message (MWM).

We give special recognition to the late Mel Stone, former owner of Mesquite Art Gallery, whose support of Love Las Cruces and Murals With A Message helped encourage the vision of making Mesquite Street a destination for meaningful public art. His support and belief in this work will not be forgotten.

We’re honored to spotlight our newest Mural With a Message, the Po’pay Mural, coming soon to the Mesquite Historic District.

Po’pay was a Pueblo religious leader who organized the 1680 Pueblo Revolt—a defining moment that helped ensure the survival of Pueblo culture and shaped the history of the American Southwest. In 2005, New Mexico honored Po’pay with a statue in the National Statuary Hall—the first person in the collection born on what would become American soil.

🎨 Muralist: Esequiel Rubio

🗿 Original Sculpture Artist: Cliff Fragua
🪨 Medium: Marble
📍 Sculpture Location: US Cultural Visitor Center

This mural is part of our vision to complete 25 Murals With a Message throughout the Mesquite Historic District—uplifting stories of culture, resilience, and shared history through public art.
