ACTION REQUESTED! Help protect federally-listed steelhead in Ross Creek!

Marin Water is quickly moving to approve a Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) for the direct pumping of water from Phoenix Lake into Bon Tempe Reservoir. The current proposal doesn't take into account the need to maintain a minimum in-stream flow for steelhead in Ross Creek, and could result in a potentially significant negative impact on fish habitat below the dam.

With plans underway for fish ladder improvements in Ross Creek and plans to remove part of the concrete channel at College of Marin, both have the potential to improve salmonid habitat in our watershed. Please encourage Marin Water to include the maintenance of minimum in-stream flows in the project proposal as a complementary measure to these other habitat improvements underway. It is possible to address water supply needs for our community without compromising the health of our watershed and the steelhead (and other wildlife!) within it.

PUBLIC COMMENTS ACCEPTED THROUGH APRIL 12! Learn more by visiting https://www.marinwater.org/PhoenixBonTempeConnection; email [email protected] with comments related to the MND.

Join a hike hosted by Bay Nature at Hal Brown Park this Saturday, 10/21!

The walk, led by wildlife biologist Katie Smith and Bay Nature's Wes Radez, will provide attendees a chance to view the ongoing restoration efforts in this area. Attendees will also learn more about how these efforts are creating critical wildlife habitat for species such as the Ridgway's rail. Friends of Corte Madera Creek has greatly contributed to the restoration efforts at Hal Brown Park over the years, so this marsh is near and dear to us!

Connecting urban biodiversity to conservation planning
TOGETHER Bay Area and the California Academy of Sciences are joining forces to bring urban biodiversity data into the Conservation Lands Network––and we need your help!

From March 17–31, look for and document these 24 species throughout the places in the greater Bay Area where people live and work: cities, towns, suburbs, neighborhoods, backyards, schoolyards! Sharing your iNaturalist observations will help us better understand how these species are using and benefiting from the urban environment and will allow us to highlight how the urban San Francisco Bay Area contributes to regional conservation.

Did you know that Marin has Spotted Owls (Strix occidentalis)! Here is a Spotted Owl contact calling in the Corte Madera Creek Watershed, just on the edge of town. There have been Great-horned owls, western screech owls, and barn owls at this location as well.
