Let's Help Ukraine Marin girl and Sonoma Co. guy help war-struck Ukrainians and soldiers with items they need. We'll be in Ukraine for the month of September. Coming up!

There will be a fund fundraiser in Sebastopol (north of San Francisco) October 4th. We are raising funds for a college dormitory in Chyhyryn. The dormitory is now a shelter, for those who have lost their homes in this war. These funds will finish clearing out all the mold and mildew from a leaky roof (since fixed), and make the whole building habitable. It will be great fun, and a fantastic cause. A highlight of the event will be a special beer, provided by Crooked Goat Brewing. The recipe is from friends in Kharkiv. Please join us for a memorable afternoon.

We celebrated Ukrainian Independence Day with 34 Ukrainian families, that live in the local area. It was a wonderful time. Great to see their happiness, and enthusiasm.

We dropped off some anti drone netting. This netting is from Canadian salmon fisherman. By law, the nets can only be used for a few years. After that the nets become an environmental hazard. Turns out it makes perfect anti drone netting. Strong enough to stop the drone, soft enough not to detonate the drone. Brent and DUFC, makes this happen All this done under the approving eye of “Lucky”.

Wouldn’t be a trip to Ukraine, without a trip to the mechanic. Luckily we broke down close to a mechanic, and could limp our van in. Once again they stopped what they were doing, and had us back in the road in 3 hours. Again, they refused to take any money.

The other day, I was asked to be a pallbearer at a soldiers funeral. If I understand the orthodox religion properly, pallbearers can’t have any relationship to the deceased person. I was humbled to be asked, and honored to pay respects to a fallen hero.

You might remember our friends Andy and Olga. They are our oldest friends here in Ukraine. 2023, They had never met us yet picked us up at the Kyiv train station, and let us stay at their house. They gave us a vehicle, some aid and said have fun. Always a treat, when we get to see them.

We grabbed some more mosquito repellent (yes, took a long time), but that’s not the story. The lady who finally helped us, walked us to the cashier, to ensure our discount. After we paid, she hugged both of us, with tears in her eyes. Noel said “Heroiam Slava” (a saying which honors their soldiers). The lady burst into tears, and walked away. The war is always here, sometimes more personal than for others.

If you remember, last November we dropped off some air bottles to friends in Ukraine. They told us their soldiers could use them as portable heaters and stoves. The bottles were such a hit, the soldiers asked for more. We put out the word in California, and scrounged up 118 bottles. We hustled them up to our friend in Canada, who was filling a shipping container destined for Ukraine. When the container arrived, we loaded the bottles in our van. A few days ago, we delivered them to our friends in Chyhyrn. They are probably already on their way to the soldiers who requested them. What a long, strange trip it’s been.
