POV: Someone said your teenager is “too old to play”… but their brain is literally still under construction!!
5 reasons teens NEED play (yes, even the too-cool-to-care ones):
1. Their brains are still developing. Play builds problem-solving, flexible thinking, creativity, and decision-making skills.
2. Social skills don’t magically appear at 13. Games, improv, team challenges, and silly group activities help teens practice communication and learn social cues with those new erupting hormones.
3. Play helps regulate stress. Adolescence comes with big emotions and major changes. Play offers a lower-pressure way to decompress, connect, and reset.
4. Creativity needs room to breathe. When teens can experiment without being graded, corrected, or compared, they get to practice taking risks BEFORE adulthood.
5. Connection comes before correction. Shared laughter and playful experiences help teens build trust, belonging, and relationships with peers and caregivers.
Teenagers don’t need every minute filled with productivity, pressure, and preparation for adulthood!
Play isn’t the opposite of learning, even as our babies get bigger and bigger. It’s part of how humans learn. At EVERY age.
Let’s stop treating adolescence like a job interview for adulthood!!
Save this for the next person who says teens are too old to play OR send it to them RIGHT NOWWWWW!
