October is Health Literacy Month! Health literacy is more than just knowing how to speak or read in your language. Your ability to understand your diagnosis, health terms, and information is all part of health literacy and allows you to reach your healthcare goals and make informed decisions about your care.

Tips to help you navigate the healthcare system and your visits:

1) Make a list of your symptoms and questions you have before going to your visit and have it available during the visit.
2) Have a way to take notes during the visit such as on a note-taking app on your phone or with pencil and paper to help you remember key information and instructions.
3) Look up local classes at the library, schools, or community organizations (like a computer class) to help you better utilize tools. This better prepares you to register online or use a check-in kiosk, log into your patient portal to see your labs and visit notes, and to look up trusted health information.
4) Don't be afraid to ask your provider questions when you don't understand or when you need to confirm information. Set time aside before the visit ends to ask them questions like what treatment looks like, what medications you are taking and why you take them, and the reason for lab work or what will happen at the next follow-up appointment.

Small changes like these can help give you a better understanding of your care and allow you to better participate in your care. Need extra help? Ask your provider for interpreter services, printed materials, or ask for help so that you can use health tools better.

A strong, healthy family is built on intentional work each and every day. During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, let's work on building healthy families and creating the accountability that helps families succeed free from violence.

Creating time and space for routine family meetings where parents can talk about important topics, discuss challenges, and be open and honest helps build a non-judgmental space to resolve issues.

Drugs, alcohol, mental health issues, past trauma or adverse childhood experiences, financial strain, poor coping strategies, and lack of emotional regulation can all increase the risk of family violence. If someone in the family needs help with these situations, it is important to encourage them to seek it. Getting help in any area of your life can improve your quality of life and that of the family.

A strong family is built around a strong support system. From providers like your doctor, family, and friends, having someone there to support you can help reduce isolation and increase resilience. A pastor, mental health counselor, work peers, and even trusted friends at the gym can add to your support system. It is important to know that a strong support person(s) work to build you up, not just hear you vent.

When everyone in the family feels heard, respected, trusted, and loved, families grow. Each person should have the opportunity to grow, learn, discover, and realize their best self. Providing space for autonomy is important for each person in the family.

Family and personal conflicts can be hard to navigate. Not everyone is ready for hard conversations and being emotionally available. Each person can build their skills by practicing self-regulation, avoiding shouting and yelling, and avoiding personal attacks. Creating space and discussing triggers can help you stay calm during these conflicts.
