No Border Wall Laredo Coalition’s Statement on U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar and Senator Joe Manchin III Visit to the U.S.-Mexico Border

Laredo, TX – No Border Wall Laredo Coalition co-founder Tricia Cortez issued the following statement in response to U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) and U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) visit to the U.S.-Mexico Border:

“We’re glad to see that Rep. Cuellar has changed his tack and is no longer allowing his presence to be used by out-of-town politicians who are not from the border but are pro-wall, anti-immigrant, and in favor of violating the property rights of South Texans.

For years, the border has been used as a political pawn to justify harsh and inhumane policies towards immigrants, many seeking refuge and asylum.

There’s no surprise that border wall proponents are proactively stoking fear with the unfounded claim that not having a wall or strong law enforcement measures on our border has created a new so-called ‘crisis’.

This follows on the heels of a visit to Laredo last week by the founder of the Oath Keepers, Elmer Stewart Rhodes, who launched into an anti-immigrant rant and threatened to bring more militia members to the border. It’s important that our elected officials take an unequivocal and uncompromising stance against these scare tactics and inflammatory rhetoric about the border.

We want to set the record straight and affirm that Laredo and many border cities of our size remain among the safest in the country. We’re tired of being used and having our day-to-day reality distorted. We are thriving and dynamic communities in this country and want to be portrayed and respected as such.

Yet, what’s disappointing is that this “crisis” narrative - which is based on disinformation and fear - continues to be spread despite the fact that the number of migrants crossing the border in recent months has not exceeded the height of 2019 arrivals under the Trump Administration, and has been on a steady downward trend since the late 1990s for the Laredo Sector and the entire border.

We need to start asking why we continue to call black and brown people crossing the border a ‘crisis’ year after year instead of building a robust system that treats them with respect and dignity. We need federal dollars to modernize, not militarize, our border particularly at our ports-of-entry (international bridges).

Furthermore, there is an urgency for real immigration reform and a solution that focuses on the countries of origin of these migrants to create safe living conditions and better educational and economic opportunities for their people.

VERIFIED: DOMESTIC TERRORIST INVITED TO SPEAK
AT TEXAS GOP EVENT ON THE BORDER: Video has surfaced showing the founder of the Oath Keepers militia, currently under federal investigation for coordinating Jan 6 attacks on the Capitol, speaking at an official GOP event in Laredo, TX.

LAREDO, TEXAS - A Facebook video has surfaced revealing that Elmer Stuart Rhodes, founder of the Oath Keepers militia, was an invited speaker at a March 26 Texas Republican Party event held on the border in Laredo to “Save America.”

Rhodes is currently under federal investigation for his role in coordinating deadly attacks on the nation’s Capitol on January 6, 2021. To date, 10 members of the organization have been indicted by federal authorities for their involvement.

In the Laredo video, Rhodes can be seen saying he expects “to go to jail soon.” The event was hosted by the Webb County Republican Party and featured speakers such as Texas Republican Party Chairman Allen West and GOP Congressional candidate Sandra Whitten, who spoke from the same stage at the event. Sponsorship for the weekend conference was provided, in part, by IBC Bank with a special social event held at the Killam Ranch.

Local residents with the No Border Wall Coalition mounted a protest of the event, pointing out the contradiction of inviting insurrectionists to the border. “You can’t come to the border saying you are trying to protect America, when you just organized an attack on America,” said Laredo Resident Valentin Ruiz, a U.S. Army Veteran.

On Monday night, the Laredo City Council unanimously passed a resolution condemning the weekend event’s central theme of describing Laredo as a dangerous and unsafe “battleground” being invaded in a new “border crisis.”

The Department of Homeland Security has named domestic terrorism as one of our greatest national security threats, with “opposition to immigration” being a key belief driving attackers. Texas Department of Public Safety reports Domestic Terrorism as increasing along the Southern US border. Congressional Rep. Bennie Thompson, Chairman of House Homeland Security Committee, has stated “A lot of them mask themselves under some guise of being patriots.” Washington Post, Feb 24, 2021,

“Extremists are coming down here telling us that we are being invaded on the border? Well, they’re right, only they are the invasion.” said Maxine Rebeles, a Laredo resident and U.S. Navy veteran.

US Military Veterans stand against the armed insurrectionists and extremists who come to the border. To these fanatics, the border is a paranoid fantasy. To us, it is our home. We live and work here. We know the reality, that the border is actually safer than most US cities. Laredo will stand its ground against hate. Please take your stereotypes, disinformation and violent dislike of Democracy and Equality, and go home.
