Building a More Water-Secure Future for Laredo 💧

Today, RGISC joined Congressman Henry Cuellar, the City of Laredo, and the North American Development Bank (NADBank) to announce a new feasibility study exploring wastewater reuse as a strategy to strengthen our community’s long-term water supply.

With growing water demands, prolonged drought, and increasing pressure on the Rio Grande, exploring innovative and sustainable water solutions is more important than ever.

Supported by a $180,000 investment from NADBank, along with matching contributions from project partners, this $261,500 study will evaluate the potential for a Community Water and Energy Resource Center (CWERC) an approach designed to recover resources from wastewater, reduce waste, and create new value for our community.

As Laredo’s only source of drinking water, the Rio Grande is central to our region’s future. Diversifying our water supply through responsible reuse strategies could help strengthen local water security while reducing pressure on the river.

At RGISC, we believe protecting our water takes collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to the generations who call this region home.

Our water future starts with the solutions we explore today.

Celebrating the Rio Grande. Standing up for its future. 🌊

Our 4th Annual James Earthart Paddle brought 45 people onto the Rio Grande as part of our Día del Río programming, celebrating the beauty, life, and importance of the river that connects us all.

This year’s paddle was different. For at least half of our journey, participants encountered the newly installed buoys, a constant reminder of the challenges facing our river. While many of us took in the breathtaking beauty of the Rio Grande, we were also confronted with the reality that structures being placed in our river threaten its natural balance and will cause irreversible harm.

The Rio Grande is more than a river. It is part of our identity, our heritage, our community, and our future. It deserves protection, respect, and preservation, not only for us, but for the generations who will come after us.

We can celebrate the beauty of the Rio Grande while standing firmly in our responsibility to protect it. Our mission remains clear. We will continue to advocate for the river, defend its natural balance, and fight for a future where generations to come can experience its beauty and life as we do today.

This week, RGISC joined Dr. Kazen and students from St. Augustine Elementary for a hike at Las Palmas as part of our Día del Río month programming! 🌳

Through this new educational program, we’re connecting local students with the green spaces in their own community while bringing their school curriculum to life through hands-on outdoor learning.

RGISC is seeking qualified professionals for the Rio Grande Restoration Project at Las Palmas Nature Trail – Phase 1.

This project will support the restoration and enhancement of one of Laredo’s important natural spaces along the Rio Grande. 🌱

The submission form will open on Thursday, October 8, 2026.
