Every fall, The STEM Alliance hears from students and families who need help accessing the technology they need for school. A hotspot can turn a long commute to an after-school job into time for homework. A laptop can make the difference for a high school senior tackling college applications, essays, and deadlines.

The school year doesn’t wait. Neither should access to the tools students need to succeed.

Through Beyond the Backpack, we’re working to say yes to every laptop and internet assistance request we can this fall. $250 provides a Chromebook for a student who needs one.

More Women Are Advancing Through Technology! 💻✨

This summer, another cohort of women completed our WATT (Women Advancing Through Technology) program, gaining the digital skills and confidence they need to succeed in today’s workforce.

One participant shared:
“I feel so much more comfortable working on the computer. Now it’s a breeze! I’m not intimidated anymore, and I know when I get a job, I will be so much more productive.”

We’re proud to celebrate another group of women taking the next step toward their goals! 💙

☀️🌿 Turn Sunshine Into Art! 🌿☀️

Looking for a fun STEM activity to try this summer at home? Let the sun do the science!

With Turmeric Sun Art, sunlight causes a natural chemical reaction that fades the turmeric pigment, leaving behind a cool silhouette of leaves, flowers, or whatever you choose. 🌞✨

What you’ll need: Turmeric • Alcohol • Paper • Baking soda • Water • Brush or sponge • Leaves, flowers, stickers, or other flat objects. ☀️ Try it!

1️⃣ Mix turmeric + alcohol and strain through a coffee filter.
2️⃣ Paint the mixture onto paper and let it dry for 15 minutes.
3️⃣ Place leaves, flowers, or other objects on top.
4️⃣ Leave in direct sunlight for 2–3 hours.
5️⃣ Rinse with baking soda + water to stop the reaction.
6️⃣ Reveal your sun art! 🌿✨

The science behind it: UV rays from the sun cause a chemical reaction that changes the turmeric pigment.

60 summers. So many discoveries. A whole lot of joy. ☀️

And just like that, Co-Op’s 60th summer has come to a close.
This summer, over 200 campers explored new STEM activities, made new friendships, and overcame obstacles. They headed to NYC to see Wicked, soaked up the sunshine at Storm King Art Center, explored the Museum of Illusions, and so much more.

There were the little moments, too. Surprise ice cream on hot summer days. Face painting. Laughter with friends. And, of course, the grand finale: Color Wars, with Team Pink taking home the win! 💗

For 60 summers, Co-Op has been a place where local children can learn, gain confidence, and simply be kids. It’s where new experiences become lasting memories and summer becomes a season of possibility.

This summer, our Shoreline Explorers spent their afternoons at the Marine Education Center, discovering the wonders of the Long Island Sound through hands-on learning and outdoor adventure. From meeting live marine animals and conducting dissections to exploring the harbor, participating in beach cleanups, creating ocean-inspired art, and conducting exciting science experiments, our explorers had the opportunity to learn more about the marine environment right outside their door.

Thank you, Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions, for providing free vision screenings for our Co-Op students! We truly appreciate your partnership and support!

👓 The Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions Club's Diane Oldham, Nancy Borzain, and Neida Robles, joined by New Rochelle Lion Mary McDonnell (not pictured), provided free vision screenings for children participating in the STEM Alliance Co-Op Summer Enrichment Program.

The five week program serves more than 200 students from all four Mamaroneck School District elementary schools, offering a mix of academic enrichment and recreational activities throughout the summer.
