Shared from The Wildlife Society--Being out in the field can be difficult—and even dangerous—for LGBTQ+ wildlifers. Researchers recently provided recommendations for institutions and individuals to help make it safer.

Plenty of research papers have covered some of the overarching institutional barriers faced by marginalized groups—like those belonging to the LBGTQ+ community—in environmental sciences, but those papers have often overlooked the individual safety challenges they ...

This week the Wyoming Game and Fish Department released a report on the status of gray wolves in the state. While conservation groups have expressed concern about how aggressive hunting practices may be threatening wolf populations in Idaho and Montana, Wyoming's numbers are well above required population numbers. Game and Fish said that the state has a minimum population of 314 wolves, well above the 100 wolves and ten breeding pairs required by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Ken Mills is the lead wolf biologist for Game and Fish and he joined Bob Beck to discuss the numbers and their accuracy.

There's still time to register for our Wildlife Capture & Chemical Immobilization field courses at the early bird rate.

We have a winter session, which is almost full, and a spring session that both take place at the Wildlife Science Center in Stacy, MN. Participants will learn about all practical aspects of capture and chemical immobilization, including safe capture techniques, pharmacology, delivery systems, patient monitoring, medical emergencies, and more. Several species will be used as ambassadors for learning, including cougars, black bears, wolves, and elk. YES, you will handle these animals!

Register by January 1 to receive the early bird rate: https://www.centerforwildlifestudies.org/courses

The BLM plans to revisit greater sage-grouse management plans, once again opening the decades-long debate over how to manage the species on multi-use landscapes.

The U.S. Department of Interior is formally revisiting greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) management plans this fall. Within the next 60 days, the Bureau of Land Management will file a public scoping notice in the Federal Register to encourage public comment on the new planning process....

Shed hunting and Elk Movement Study

In western Wyoming, shed antler hunters may increase displacement of elk into livestock, increasing risk of disease transmission. In conjunction with Wyoming Game and Fish Department, University of CA-Berkeley, WY-TWS, Wyoming Wildlife Federation, and Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, a preliminary study is underway in western Wyoming to assess potential impacts of shed antler hunters on movement and behavior of GPS-collared elk. We are requesting volunteers pursuing shed antlers this season to collect and provide GPS tracks from their outings, particularly from targeted areas near Cody, Hyattville, and Buffalo. These data will facilitate analyses relative to data from elk and covariates (e.g., NDVI).

GPS tracks from volunteer shed antler hunters WILL NOT be provided to the public.

Individuals interested in assisting this project can contact WGFD disease biologist and WY-TWS past-president Eric Maichak at 307-360-6616 or [email protected].

Supporters say feedground decisions impact cattle and the bill will ensure those interests are considered. Critics contend the Wyoming Game and Fish Department is once again being shackled by politics.

Xu et al. describes how a team of researchers have worked on pronghorn and mule deer populations to further examine the effect of fences on wildlife behavior and population consequences

Our work provides empirical evidence on how fences affect wildlife movement. Importantly, Barrier Behaviour Analysis (BaBA) can be applied to evaluate other linear features (such as roads, railways a...
