Originally constructed in 1923, this iconic Casper landmark has long been a centerpiece of the community, known for its distinctive architecture and generations of students who passed through its halls. When the future of the building was uncertain, community members rallied to advocate for its preservation rather than replacement.

The Alliance for Historic Wyoming helped lead that effort through a “This Place Matters” campaign, raising awareness and demonstrating just how much the school meant to the people of Casper. That collective voice played an important role in ensuring the building would be preserved and continue serving the community.

Today, Natrona County High School remains in use, blending historic character with modern updates, proof that preservation and progress can go hand in hand.
From uncertainty to continued legacy, this project shows the power of community-driven preservation.

This Fossil Friday, we’re heading to the University of Wyoming Geological Museum, where deep history meets a historic place.

Located on the campus of the University of Wyoming, the museum is housed in a historic building and offers an up-close look at Wyoming’s prehistoric past. Inside, you’ll find impressive fossil displays, including towering dinosaur skeletons and specimens that help tell the story of life millions of years ago.

The museum makes these discoveries accessible to the public, connecting visitors to Wyoming’s ancient landscapes while also preserving an important piece of the state’s built history.

Today we’re highlighting the Aladdin Coal Tipple; one of Wyoming’s most endangered historic places.

Built in the late 1800s, this towering wooden structure is believed to be the last standing wooden coal tipple from the 19th century in the United States. Once central to the town of Aladdin’s coal industry, it played a vital role in loading and transporting coal that helped fuel regional growth and development.

Today, the tipple is in imminent danger of collapse, threatened by time, weather, and structural instability. Its loss would mean the disappearance of a truly irreplaceable piece of industrial history, not just for Wyoming, but for the nation.

The Alliance for Historic Wyoming is actively working to save the structure and raising funds for its stabilization and restoration. Please consider donating to the Alliance's Watchlist fund.

Places like this are rare. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.

Today for Mid-century Monday, we’re highlighting the Wyoming School for the Deaf, an important institution whose campus reflects the thoughtful, functional design of the mid-20th century.

Its mid-century architecture emphasizes clean lines, practical spaces, and a sense of openness, hallmarks of a design movement that shaped schools and public buildings across the country. Built during a period of expanding educational infrastructure, the campus was designed not only to serve students’ needs but to foster community, accessibility, and learning.

Beyond its architectural significance, the Wyoming School for the Deaf has played a vital role in the lives of generations of students and families, providing education, connection, and opportunity within Wyoming’s Deaf community.

Buildings like these remind us that preservation is not only about architecture, it’s about honoring the institutions and communities that shaped Wyoming’s history.
