✨America 250 Events Happening in La Porte County!✨

~News From Bruce Johnson, La Porte County Historian~

It has been almost one year since America 250 officially started its celebration on Flag Day on June 14, 2025. As part of our continued Semi-quincentennial observances, all residents, businesses, and schools in La Porte County are encouraged to display the American flag on Sunday, June 14 and continue for the next 21 days through July 4, 2026. This is to observe the 251st Anniversary of the founding of the United States Army on June 14, 1775 and the adoption of the U.S. Flag on June 14,1777.

The Lantern Relay: Nine lanterns are traveling through 9 regions of Indiana as a symbol of the Revolutionary War. A lantern will arrive and be on display at the La Porte County Historical Society Museum from June 17th to June 20th. The public is welcome to come and see the lantern and visit the special America 250 exhibit.

The La Porte County and Michigan City Historical Societies are both encouraging all churches in La Porte County and neighboring counties to ring their church bells on the 4th of July at 12:00 noon in celebration of our country’s 250th birthday.

The La Porte County Courthouse will soon be beautifully decorated for the America 250 celebration with red, white, and blue bunting and an impressive display of all of the various flags used throughout our country’s history.

On Sunday, July 5, 2026, America 250 is promoting “America’s Potluck Luncheon”. Family, friends, neighbors, and other groups are encouraged to celebrate together in backyards, and city, county, and national parks.

On Wednesday, July 8th, 2026, the Declaration of Independence will be read to the public at the same time across the nation and its territories. In La Porte County it will be read at 5:00 P.M. Central Standard Time near the Potawatomi Indian statue on the East side of the courthouse. It was on July 8, 1776, that the Declaration of Independence was first read to the American public.

✨La Porte County History Trivia✨

Answer to Question #20

The Indiana State Prison in Michigan City was once known as 'Prison North'.

The first prison in Indiana opened in Jeffersonville in 1822 and it resembled a stockade. A new facility was built in 1847 in Clarksville, though it was still called the Jeffersonville Prison.

In the late 1850s, there was a problem with the overcrowding at the Jeffersonville Prison. This led to a second State prison being built in the northern half of the state. This new facility would be named ‘Prison North’ while the original prison would be referred to as ‘Prison South’.

Chauncey Blair sold 100 acres of his property in Michigan City to the prison board for $4,500 in 1859. Prisoners from Prison South were transported to Michigan City to help build the new prison. Prison North officially opened in 1860. Older prisoners and those who were convicted of more severe crimes were sent to Prison North, while younger inmates convicted of less severe crimes stayed at Prison South.

In 1897, it was decided that Prison North would be known as the Indiana State Prison as Prison South would turn into the State Reformatory. During this change, new mugshots were taken and new numbers were assigned to all prisoners.

Another major change came to the Indiana State Prison in 1912 when the Indiana Hospital For Insane Criminals was opened on the prison grounds. All those who had been accused of being insane in the state of Indiana were sent to this section of the prison.

In 1954, the inmates in the hospital were transferred to the new Dr. Norman M. Beatty Hospital located in Westville. Beatty’s would later become the Westville Correctional Center in 1979. The prison in Westville is currently undergoing construction to expand since the Indiana State Prison will be closing in the near future.

✨Underground Railroad in Northwest Indiana Program at the Museum!✨

Join us at the Museum on Thursday, June 18 from 5:00 - 7:00pm for a program on the Underground Railroad in Northwest Indiana.

This public program will offer a broad historical look at the Underground Railroad in northwestern Indiana, highlighting the courageous journeys of freedom seekers and the efforts of local abolitionists who assisted them in their pursuit of liberty. Special attention will be given to abolitionist Charles Osborn, whose anti-slavery work and advocacy helped shape early resistance movements in the region.

The event will also explore the continuing significance of Juneteenth, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, and reflecting on how the legacy of freedom and equality continues to connect Black and White Americans today through shared history and remembrance.

In addition, organizers will present information about ongoing efforts to establish a nationally recognized “Chicago to Detroit Freedom Trail,” linking important Underground Railroad sites across northern Indiana and neighboring states. The proposed trail aims to preserve and interpret the stories of those who risked their lives in the struggle for freedom.

The evening will feature guest speakers, historical presentations, and community discussion. Refreshments will be served.

This is a FREE event and all are welcome to attend!
