LaPorte Service League was formed on February 26, 1932 by a group of prominent young women in the community. Their goal was to provide medical and social support for the needy children of LaPorte. The first meeting was held in March of 1932 with 15 charter members and Mrs. Hallie Fox as their president. Each member was bound by the constitution to spend 100 hours per year in the service of child w
elfare. Later the hours were reduced to 50 hours when the ladies began working outside the home. Their first fund raising project provided undernourished children with "bottled sunshine" in the form of cod liver oil. In the 1940's and 50's the "Penny Milk" project was funded by LaPorte Service League. They contributed one penny for every half pint of milk consumed by the underprivileged children of LaPorte. LaPorte Service League's most ambitious project has always been the live drama productions given each year for the children of LaPorte and surrounding communities. The ladies have produced a play every year except in 1978-1979 when Boston Middle School was under reconstruction. The first 3 act play "Cinderella" was presented in 1934. Several hundred delighted children attended this first performance. Today over 6000 children and adults attend the play at LaPorte High School. In the 1940's LaPorte Service League became active in supporting the war effort. Benefit dances were held to support the United War Relief Fund. In the 1950's the ladies supplied the YMCA with new curtains for the girls' section, provided records for the jukebox and pledged money for the building project. The ladies volunteered at Beatty Memorial Hospital in Westville, IN, worked with the TB and Polio Associations and held fashion shows to fund their projectrs. In the 1960s and 70's LaPorte Service League was supporting the VNA, delivering Meals on Wheels and providing services and funds for the residents of LaPorte County Home. The eye screening of elementary children began during this year. Today our 60 member group volunteers over 2000 hours each year. Projects include Salvation Army cooking, Salvation Army bell ringing, County Home Bingo, Meals on Wheels, LaPorte Community Schools Tutoring, Eye Screening, Lights Out At The Library, Annual play and donations to various philanthropic causes.
