League of Michigan Bicyclists - LMB

League of Michigan Bicyclists - LMB UNIFY cyclists into one voice, ADVOCATE for safety and access for all cyclists, and EDUCATE about cyclists rights and responsibilities.

The League of Michigan Bicyclists (LMB) is a statewide 501(c)(3) non-profit membership organization. Our mission is to improve life through bicycling. ADVOCACY
LMB is a key resource for legislators and other policymakers. LMB works to defend the rights of bicyclists and to advance policies that benefit Michigan cyclists. Annually, LMB hosts Bicycle Advocacy Day at the State Capitol. LMB staff and

volunteers regularly represent the interests of Michigan bicyclists at public hearings and committees at all levels of state and local government. Visit: http://www.lmb.org/advocacy for more on advocacy efforts. EDUCATION
Education plays a key role in improving conditions for bicycling. LMB seeks to educate bicyclists, motorists, engineers, and law enforcement personnel. These efforts include developing materials like our What Every Michigan Bicyclist Must Know and What Every Young Michigan Bicyclist Must Know booklets, which are distributed to bike clubs and shops, police departments, libraries, organizations, and anyone interested in promoting safe bicycling. LMB also develops and distributes training materials for law enforcement, parents, bicycle commuters, and those interested in running bike rodeos. LMB supports Safe Routes to School in Michigan and serves on the Governor’s Traffic Safety Advisory Commission Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Team, the Michigan Complete Streets Advisory Council, Healthy Kids Healthy Michigan Coalition, and works with other like-minded groups focused on advancing bicycle safety. TOURS
LMB Bicycle Tours – from weekend family rides to week-long fully supported tours – show that bicycle touring is a healthy, easy, and fun way to experience Michigan. Tour proceeds are a major funding source for LMB’s many programs to make Michigan a more bicycling-friendly state. Learn more at www.LMB.org/tours. PUBLICATIONS & NEWS
LMB’s Michigan Bicyclist Magazine keeps members and the general public abreast of legislation, legal trends, current events, and features stories on bicycle touring, commuting, engineering, education, promotion, safety, and physical conditioning. LMB’s annual Ride Calendar is a comprehensive publication of Michigan’s many single and multi-day rides, tours, races, and other bicycle-related events. LMB also distributes a monthly E-news to keep supporters updated of current local, state, and national bicycling issues. MEMBERSHIP

In fact, under MCL 257.636, the requirement for passing when 3 feet of clearance is impracticable, the motorist is permitted to pass closer provided they do so “at a safe distance to the left of that bicycle at a safe speed.” In practice, this wording gives motor vehicle operators excuse to “hurry” and make a close pass without slowing when faced with oncoming traffic that doesn’t permit safely passing with 3 feet (at least). Nothing in this world is so urgent that waiting a few moments is less desirable than taking risks with someone else’s life or well-being.

The weather has finally been consistently warm and it is essential to pay attention to everyone utilizing the city of Detroit’s roadways. Bicyclists have legal access to all roadways except freeways. Therefore, it is important to share to roads to ensure the safety of all our community members.

Our Executive Director, Andy Rohrer, had the honor of riding with The Chain Gang, on June 9, marking the 10th Anniversary of the horrific crash that took five of their members and left several others with serious injuries. We helped them “finish the ride.” We rode the route they had intended to ride on June 7, 2016. Out of that tragedy, the Kalamazoo cycling community, and the State of Michigan resolved to make our laws more equitable. The turn out demonstrates the solidarity the large community still holds with the riders and speaks to the great work of Bike Friendly Kalamazoo.

We’re back with the monthly DPR roundup, and the event lineup is heating up for summer riding. 🔥🚲 Each month, we highlight events in LMB’s Dollar Per Rider (DPR) program, rides that generously give back $1, $2, or $5 per rider to support safer, better bicycling across Michigan.

This month’s photo comes from Bike Tour Vacations' Ride to Pictured Rocks Tour. This returning favorite features views like Battleship Row and is one of the $5 per rider events they’re putting on in July. This level of support helps power even more of LMB’s work statewide, thank you to our DPR partners who continue to show up in a big way.

Take a look at the Ride to Pictured Rocks Tour (July 18-24) and check out the other DPR rides coming up next month:

More news on Safe Routes to School Michigan. We are moving the needle the right direction. Promoting physical activity and teaching kids about safely utilizing all modes of transportation is paramount for long term societal health. But more needs to be done. We owe it to our kids to continue demanding safe, usable infrastructure. And, we must get our Michigan state Representatives to pass the VRU, in this session!

Safe Routes to School is happening all over Michigan! Even in places you may not think bicycles have utility. This goes to show that bikes are for everyone and can be used virtually anywhere for not just recreation and sport, but also for transport. Congrats to Tahquamenon Area Schools on this grant award.

As part of the federal Safe Routes to Schools initiative, we congratulate Tahquamenon Area Schools!
