Did you miss our May 5 webinar? The recording is now available.
Kahli Zietlow, MD, and Leslie Dubin, LMSW, ACSW, of the University of Michigan presented on how medical professionals evaluate decision-making capacity—and what that means for legal practice.

The session covers:
-How capacity is assessed across medicine, social work, and law
-Why capacity is domain-specific—a person may have capacity for some decisions but not others
-Key limitations of medical assessments, including that they reflect a specific point in time and context
-How attorneys and other professionals can better interpret and apply clinical opinions on capacity in legal settings

This webinar is part of the MAGIC Multidisciplinary Cross Training Series.

If that's you, we want applications by June 15, 2026.

What does the MAGIC Lived Experience Advisory Group actually do? Members of the group will:
-Share their experiences with the guardianship system
-Talk about what works and what doesn't
-Make recommendations for improving guardianship in Michigan
-Help shape how their voices are heard in policy and practice

Participants who are selected for the group will be compensated with a $25 gift card for their time and expertise at each meeting.

MEJI and MLTCOP Staff Featured in Articles on Nursing Home Conditions, Finances, and Residents’ Funds

Michigan Elder Justice Initiative (MEJI) and Michigan Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (MLTCOP) staff members have been featured in new articles in MLive and the Detroit Free Press regarding nursing homes.

The MLive article cites testimony from State Ombudsman Salli Pung, Systemic Public Policy Advocate Sarah Slocum, and Director Alison Hirschel in front of the Senate Oversight Committee on the need for better staffing and more financial transparency.

The Free Press article quotes Assistant State Ombudsman Michelle Danou speaking about legislation to increase Medicaid nursing home residents’ $60/month personal needs allowance.

MEJI and MLTCOP are pleased to continue their advocacy for better quality of care and life for Michigan’s nursing home residents, and welcomes support from other individuals and organizations that share these goals.

MEJI and MLTCOP Testify at Senate Oversight Hearing on Nursing Home Financing

The Michigan Elder Justice Initiative and Michigan Long Term Care Ombudsman Program presented in front of the Michigan Senate Oversight Committee. The hearing was sparked by MEJI’s June 2025 report, "Public Funds into Private Pockets: How Nursing Homes May Be Hiding Profits and Depriving Residents of Care and Quality." MEJI and MLTCOP staff discussed the poor quality of care and life that many Michigan nursing home residents experience as well as the need for more financial transparency and accountability in nursing home financing.

Dr. Ashvin Gandhi, an economist at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, testified remotely about how many nursing homes make inflated payments for goods and services to other companies they own or operate, making the nursing home look less profitable while providing the related companies with excessive profits.
