The closure of our facility is not due to a lack of programming success. For over 30 years, Casa continues to provide highly experienced, deeply educated leadership rooted in the communities we serve. Our programs demonstrate sustained classroom success and a level of expertise not found anywhere else, during a time when demand for culturally grounded education continues to grow.

The closure of our physical space is not a reflection of diminished impact or leadership capacity. Rather, it reflects a rapidly shifting funding landscape in which sponsors and grantmakers we relied upon that hold corporate or federal ties are now operating under executive orders and compliance pressures that scrutinize whether cultural support may be perceived as “DEI-related.”

Many have pointed to existing arts venues as alternatives. What is often misunderstood is that Casa de Rosado was created precisely because those spaces do not offer Hispanic-led governance or programming shaped by our community’s needs. Casa was a safe, community-directed environment where cultural work was not scheduled into leftover time or framed through external priorities. While other institutions may offer space, they do not offer the autonomy, trust, or leadership representation that made Casa essential.

Casa continues to provide year-round, community-directed arts programming where our leadership and expertise are trusted without the need for permission or translation. The loss of our space marks not only the closure of a building, but the loss of a rare, self-determined cultural institution in Lansing.

Our work does not end; we are rooted in ancestral knowledge and sustained by a commitment transcending history. Nuestro trabajo no termina; estamos arraigados en el conocimiento ancestral y sostenidos por un compromiso que trasciende la historia.

A Message to Our Community
After deep reflection and with heavy hearts, Casa will be closing our physical facility. This decision was not made out of desire, but out of necessity. Rising expenses related to insurance and taxes, combined with declining grants and sponsorships—despite the growth of our programs—have made it impossible for us to sustain the space.

While our building is closing, our mission is not. Casa will continue its work in classrooms and throughout the community. We remain committed to collaborating with our community partners to host workshops and continue cherished traditions such as Hispanic Heritage Month and Lansing’s Día de Mu***os.

We are profoundly grateful for the memories we created together. From celebrating the work of local artists, to hosting meaningful conversations about issues impacting our community, to sharing music, art, food, and dancing in our courtyard and galería—these moments were powerful because of you. Your presence, energy, and love for our culture made Casa what it was, and we thank you wholeheartedly.

As we navigate this transition—and as we face a hostile administration poised against the well being of our people—we ask our community to remain strong, united, and hopeful. Casa’s spirit lives on through each of you, and our work continues.
With gratitude and resilience,

Casa

Aztec roots- The turkey is one of the first animals to be domesticated by indigenous people. The people of Mexico, which include the Aztecs, Mayans, Mixtec, Toltecs and many others domesticated not only crops such as corn and tomatoes but animals such as turkeys. The turkeys you enjoy today are descendants of eastern USA turkeys and those in central Mexico.

The Aztecs called the turkey Chalchiuhtotolin (chaal-choo-toe -toe-lean). A deity in the 260 day Aztec tonalpohaulli calendar, in its male form the turkey is the God of disease and plague & self destruction & in its female form possesses cleansing powers & absolution from guilt. Chalchiuhtotolin rules over flint stone and water.

Sunday Oct. 19 1pm- 4pm- Today’s Workshops! Pan de Mu***os, Ofrendas, and Memory: A Día de Mu***os Gathering, at Casa de Rosado- our final day of our free Hispanic Heritage Month workshops!

Día de los Mu***os season is here — a time to gather, create, and remember together. Join us for two hands-on workshops at Casa de Rosado: Pan de Mu***os, where we’ll bake the traditional bread of remembrance, and Ofrenda 101, where we’ll learn the meaning behind the altar’s tiers and elements as we build a shared community ofrenda. Both events lead up to Lansing’s 29th Annual Día de los Mu***os Celebration at the Michigan History Center, honoring memory, culture, and the beauty of connection across generations.

Bring your family, friends, and curiosity — each session is drop-in style, free (donations appreciated) and open to all!

Pan de Mu***os – Bread of the Dead Tutorial at Casa de Rosado, 204 E. Mt Hope Ave, Lansing, MI

Step into our cocina, kitchen, with us for one of the sweetest Día de Mu***os traditions! Learn the story and symbolism of pan de mu***os while we mix, shape, and bake together. This mildly sweet bread — flavored with orange and sprinkled with sugar or sesame seeds — represents the circle of life and the love we continue to share with those who came before us. Warm from the oven, it’s perfect to place on your ofrenda or enjoy with a cup of morning coffee.

There will be two sessions- one at 1:15pm and another at 2:45pm. No registration required for either session.

Build An Ofrenda: Celebrate Día de Los Mu***os 101

Sunday Oct 19 1pm -4pm at Casa de Rosado, 204 E. t Hope Ave, Lansing, MI

Honor our ancestors by celebrating the Aztec roots of Día de los Mu***os. Together we’ll explore the meaning of each tier and the role of candles, papel picado, cempasuchil, water, and food offerings in welcoming spirits home. Notes to a loved one or copies of photos are welcome additions to this shared altar, which will later move to the Michigan History Center for viewing during Lansing’s 29th Día de los Mu***os celebration. This workshop is intended for beginners.

Today is the last day to decorate a sugar skull at our center! Saturday, Oct. 18 • 11am–2pm

Sugar Skull Decorating Workshop
Día de los Mu***os has roots reaching back more than 3,000 years to Indigenous celebrations of life, memory, and renewal — it’s not Mexican Halloween! Our calaveras (skulls) are joyous, not scary — bright, playful symbols of love and remembrance. Drop in anytime to decorate your own sugar skull in honor of a departed loved one. Each one takes about an hour or less and will be ready to add to your ofrenda at home.
