The contest is open to **MPA members only**.

Before you submit your entries, here are a few important reminders:

📅 **Eligible publication period:**
August 1, 2025 – July 31, 2026
Entries must have been published during this period, or the majority of the content must have run during this timeframe.

💻 **Registration is required.**
When registering, use Association Code: **MPA26**
⚠️ The code is case-sensitive.

💰 **Check your dues!**
Your **2026 and any past-due balances must be paid OR a payment arrangement must be in place by tonight's deadline.** Otherwise, your entries will be disqualified.

Please review both the rules on the first page of the contest website AND the complete MPA contest rules. Double-check that each entry is submitted in the correct category.

The Richard Milliman Michigan Journalist of the Year Award is an annual competition sponsored by the Michigan Press Association Foundation. In 2016, the Michigan Journalist of the Year award was renamed in honor of Richard Milliman, an MPA Foundation founder and long-term supporter and advocate of the press in Michigan.
Entries may come from news outlets, individual journalists, or others acting on their behalf. Entries will be judged by a panel representative of journalism professionals, educators, and members of the Foundation board.
Entries are being accepted now, as of August 1, 2026. The submission should include work from October 1, 2025 - September 30, 2026. Entry Deadline: 11:59 pm, October 30, 2026
For this competition, a “body of work” may comprise up to six examples of the journalist’s work during the contest period. Each entry must include a cover letter of up to 300 words highlighting the quality and impact of the journalist’s work. Entries may include supporting material to show how the journalist’s work made a difference in the community or across Michigan.
DEADLINE:
Submit entries with the Subject “Journalist of the Year and name of nominee to: [email protected], by 11:59 pm, October 30, 2026.
Include all 1) attachments, 2) a login (if behind a paywall). Incomplete entries will not be included for judging.

Wade H. McCree Awards for the Advancement of Justice

Close: February 6

The Wade H. McCree Award recognizes Michigan broadcast, print and on-line journalists whose work fosters greater public understanding of the values of our legal and judicial systems.
To be eligible, journalistic work must be published, broadcast and/or posted between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2025. The work must inform and educate citizens about the role of the law, the courts, law enforcement agencies, or the legal profession in society. The work could also disclose practices in need of improvement and encourage legal and legislative efforts to reform or modernize our laws, courts, and law enforcement agencies.
Entries may consist of feature or news articles, analyses, editorials, or combinations of these. In the broadcast category, documentaries, educational or editorial programs may be submitted. Any Michigan newspaper, news service, news syndicate or network, magazine, television or radio station or legal publication, or any employees of such entities are eligible to enter. There is no charge for entering.

Contest begins December 1, 2025 and ends February 6, 2026.
