MPHI is still receiving high school student applications (Fall Grades 9-11) for the virtual 2025 MPHI-PHIRE (Public Health Initiative for Resourceful Education) Cohort. The program seeks to empower and educate youth about the opportunities and challenges in public health and inspire them to pursue careers in this vital field. What better way to celebrate March Women's History Month with our dear Founders - Chum Mary Ward Barnes, Chum Joyce Tate Brown, and Chum Theodora Jackson Cora. Read below about their wonderful friendship. Let us carry on the tradition.

CHUMS STORY
A Norfolk, Virginia social and civic club began as a friendship between three women. Mary Ward Barnes, Joyce Tate Brown, and Theodora Jackson Cora founded Chums, Inc. A cold, rainy February night in 1946 inspired Chums. Barnes' red Thunderbird convertible held the three founders. The war was over, the young women had military boyfriends who were not home, and segregation persisted. Since they had nothing to do that night, the three friends formed a social club called "Chums." While attending Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia, the trio became friends. Chums began as a social club but adopted a new focus. The club operated locally until 1952, when it became Chums, Inc.

Origins of March Women's History Month
Women's History Month began as Women's History Week in 1978 in Santa Rosa, California, aligning with International Women's Day, which was established in 1911 to honor women's achievements. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation for Women's History Week, encouraging nationwide participation. This initiative led to Congress officially designating March as Women's History Month in 1987.

Continuing the Celebration
Since 1995, U.S. presidents have issued annual proclamations recognizing March as Women's History Month. The celebration's roots trace back to 1857, when women in New York City protested poor working conditions. This month serves to highlight and honor the significant contributions of women to American society, many of which have historically gone unrecognized.
