"To prevent tragedies like this from happening, last year, UCSD implemented a special policy for situations involving alcohol and drug intoxication. They call it the Medical Amnesty Program [MAP]."

Several people at University of California, San Diego were hospitalized early Saturday over alcohol poisoning, the school confirmed.

Schiffer said since he first started as chief up to this year, the number of medical amnesty cases has been significant.

“It’s a never-ending effort, but I’m really pleased with the reduction of hospitalizations,”

After taking over as LUPD police chief from Edward Shupp, Jason Schiffer has made strides in building the department's relationship with the students.

As more information began to trickle out from the investigation, it became apparent that if someone had just called 911 for help, the scenario might have played out differently.

HB 595 protects people under 21 from being arrested for possession of alcohol if they call the police to save a life.

#41 has been signed and goes in to effect on July 1st! Florida's bi-partisan Medical Amnesty bill joins 40 other states to enact this crucial and life-saving policy! Big thanks to Senator Jeff Brandes and State Representative David Silvers for coming together to champion this for Florida!

Beginning July 1, people drinking under the age of 21 will not face legal consequences if they seek medical help for someone in danger.

"You may be hesitant to call 911 because you worry you’ll get your friend (and possibly yourself) into trouble, especially if you’re too young to drink legally or if illegal drugs are involved. SELF doesn’t condone underage drinking or illegal drug use, but it’s always important to be able to get help in a potentially deadly situation without fear of repercussion. To encourage this, more than 30 states and the District of Columbia have introduced medical amnesty laws."

Don’t hesitate to act. It may save your friend's life.

We’d like to share a little about #47...

In September, we learned about a 2017 Carmel High School Graduate who’s currently attending IU. She had returned to Eigenmann dorm with her friend where they “found a boy unresponsive on the 4th floor.” Because of being MGD educated they called 911, stayed, and helped the first responders. The Good Samaritan’s Mom shared, “Madison has many friends down at IU now (a lot not from Carmel) and she always reminds her crowd before going out to call 911 if they think anyone is in distress.”
We would like to thank Carmel High School for partnering with MGD, as well as Madison and her Mother for sharing this story.

"After a medical amnesty policy was implemented at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, the average daily number of alcohol-related calls to the school’s emergency medical services (EMS) agency went up, but calls requiring advanced life support services fell by nearly 60 percent.

The results at Georgetown suggest the policy empowers intoxicated students, or bystanders, to call for medical assistance before a crisis develops, they add."

Did you know that universities can adopt medical amnesty policies even if their state doesn't offer a statewide medical amnesty policy?

Seven University students have been granted medical amnesty, which means their need for medical attention will not result in a spot on their University record.

: Don't let fear of trouble keep you from calling for help. We challenge you to get to know your state, campus, and organization’s laws and policies around medical amnesty.

Download our Medical Amnesty Resource for links to your state law and campus policy. Don't have one? This resource also provides templates for Advocacy Letters and Petitions to encourage your state, campus, and organizational leaders to implement one (www. withus.org/upstander-toolbox)

Thank you to our Prevention Partners and co-sponsors of today's : The Medical Amnesty Initiative and the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values who both are doing great work advocating and raising awareness for Medical Amnesty/Good Samaritan Laws and Policies.
