"Individual gun owners and firearm‑rights organizations have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan challenging the constitutionality of the state’s firearm license‑to‑purchase and pistol registration scheme.

The suit names Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, Michigan State Police Director Colonel James Grady II, and several local law‑enforcement agencies responsible for administering license‑to‑purchase applications. Plaintiffs include Michigan Gun Owners (MGO), Michigan Gun Coalition for Responsible Owners (MCRGO), Michigan Open Carry (MOC), and the National Rifle Association of America (NRA).

The complaint alleges that Michigan’s licensing and reporting requirements violate the Second and Fourteenth Amendments and cannot be justified under the historical standard laid out in the Supreme Court case New York Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen.

'Michigan's current License to Purchase scheme includes a rudderless standard to exercise a fundamental constitutionally-protected right. Any Michigan police agency can forever deny any citizen's right to acquire a firearm for any reason with no defined legal standard or right of review. Racism was the origin of capricious gun control laws in Michigan and its citizens deserve better.' said Dean G. Greenblatt, counsel for Michigan Open Carry.

The suit seeks declaratory and injunctive relief blocking enforcement of the challenged statutes, as well as the deletion of firearm‑ownership records maintained by the state."

Here's the requested comment we provided, I guess it didn't make the cut. 🤷‍♀️

"MOC strongly supports the U.S. Postal Service’s proposed rule to allow the mailing of lawful handguns. For nearly a century, an outdated 1927 federal ban treated handguns differently from long guns despite both being constitutionally protected arms. The Department of Justice correctly determined that this restriction violates the Second Amendment, and USPS is right to conform its rules accordingly.

Responsible Michigan gun owners already ship fi****ms legally through private carriers under strict conditions (unloaded, securely packaged, tracked with signature confirmation, and fully compliant with federal and state law). Adding USPS as an option simply expands access for law-abiding citizens without creating new loopholes. Criminals do not obey mailing regulations or background-check requirements, they obtain guns through illegal channels regardless. Attorney General Nessel’s opposition reflects the same anti-gun politics that routinely burdens legal firearm owners in Michigan while doing nothing to stop actual crime."

Concealable handguns have been banned from being mailed unless they come from licensed dealers since 1927.
