🚨 Michigan Anglers – Your Voice Matters! 🚨

We worked for a long time to increase fishing opportunities in Michigan and open bass fishing to year round catch and release. Decisions were made with science and it has been a huge success. Bass fishing has never been better than it is today in Michigan, these are the good old days. Right now, there’s a proposal to completely close smallmouth bass fishing on Burt, Mullett, Crooked, Pickerel, and Black Lakes during May and early June. The Michigan DNR Fisheries Division has stated a season closure is not scientifically necessary and it is opposed by the MUCC.

To make your opinion on the matter heard you have two options. Attend the November 6 Natural Resources Commission meeting in Lansing, or send an email to [email protected]

Let’s stand together to protect Michigan’s world-class smallmouth fisheries and make sure decisions are based on science, not speculation.

Growing up I didn’t understand why people looked at November 15th as a holiday. Kids would miss school, friends would tell me they were heading up north for deer camp, and I never really got it. I didn’t grow up hunting, didn’t come from a family that did, and honestly didn’t see the appeal.

7 years ago, a Saddleback employee introduced me to a show on Netflix called MeatEater. It connected food with hunting in a way that I never heard verbalized. As someone in the restaurant industry with an incredible passion for food, this piqued my interest. Before long, I was thinking about hunting every day, watching countless YouTube videos, reading books and convincing myself I needed to get out there.

When I finally harvested my first deer, I understood it. As someone curious about all things food it opened up a new world of possibilities. I learned to butcher the deer myself and began experimenting with new recipes. Since then my family has been enjoying meals that contain wild game 2-3 times a week. It became more than a hobby, it turned into a way to teach my kids where their meals come from, to have a greater respect for wildlife, and to start a family tradition we never had before.

It’s crazy to think that 7 years ago I had no experience, and now I have the opportunity to announce COACH’S WILL BE HOSTING IT’S FIRST ANNUAL BUCK POLE, SATURDAY NOVEMBER 15th!

Why are we doing this? Sharing stories and getting children excited about the outdoors is something I deeply value. I get that hunting isn’t for everyone, I used to feel that way too. But whether you hunt or not, we can all agree that time outdoors, sharing food and stories, and connecting with family beats another day staring at a screen. That’s what this event is all about: food, family, stories, and community.

What is it? The team has been working incredibly hard to put together a unique event. We’re going past the traditional buck pole and turning this into a real community celebration. We’ll have a pig roast, beer specials, live music from Starfarm, a hot cocoa bar for the kids, and prizes for both youth and adult categories. Every kid 16 and under will receive a participation prize, and we’ll be donating a portion of proceeds to the MUCC’s Michigan Out-of-Doors Youth Camp to help more kids get outside and connected to nature.
What’s a Buck Pole? A buck pole is a Michigan hunting tradition that’s been around for more than 70 years, serving as a gathering place for hunters, family, and friends to celebrate the opening of deer season. After a successful hunt, people bring their deer to be displayed, sharing stories about their hunts. What started as a small community gathering has grown into a statewide event that blends friendly competition with food, drinks, music, and prizes.

Should you Attend? If you are at all interested in the outdoors, yes! It is never too late to learn something new. I started with 0 experience 7 years ago. This is an opportunity to meet people knowledgeable about the outdoors, learn more, and have a great time. I’ve met so many incredible people through the outdoors, and this is a chance to make new connections in your community.
