Safe & Just Michigan

Safe & Just Michigan To achieve these goals, Safe & Just Michigan develops data-driven proposals for reducing the prison population while ensuring public safety.

Safe & Just Michigan, a non-profit public policy organization, advocates for evidence-based policies that reduce the harms of the criminal legal system and promote justice, community safety and healing. Because policy choices, not crime rates, determine corrections spending, Safe & Just Michigan advocates re-examining those policies and shifting our resources to services that prevent crime, rehabi

litate offenders and address the needs of all our citizens in a cost-effective manner. It informs policymakers, advocacy groups, affected communities and the general public about these issues through numerous means, including a website, a newsletter, research reports, legislative testimony and speaking appearances.

Health care providers are facing crippling staffing shortages that affect access to care. If unaddressed, this problem will only get worse, according to a report by the Michigan Health Council studying the job market for 36 common health care occupations.

This recent Bridge Michigan article shares how Michigan’s population is getting older, and there’s not enough young people coming into the workforce to replace them.

Michigan must remove barriers that prevent people trained to work in the medical field from taking the jobs waiting for them there, or that deter them from training to do so. People who have criminal records don’t just have that — they frequently also have college degrees, occupational and professional licenses, supervised experience and on-the-job training are ready and qualified to take open jobs in hospitals, nursing homes and other medical settings. The only thing stopping them are state laws and policies.

‘The baby boom really boomed in Michigan.’ The wave of resulting retirements is shrinking the state’s labor force, and experts warn population trends could be bad news for the state.
