Ingham County Health Department AmeriCorps Programs

Ingham County Health Department AmeriCorps Programs This page represents the 3 national service programs hosted by the Ingham County Health Department:

ICHD's AmeriCorps State Program serves populations experiencing disproportionately high rates of obesity and chronic disease. AmeriCorps State members teach nutrition education, promote exercise, distribute food, and support families in growing their own food. AmeriCorps members spend a summer or a year at local nonprofit organizations targeting underserved communities. The ICHD's AmeriCorps VISTA

Program (Power of We AmeriCorps VISTA) seeks to bring communities out of poverty through education and community & economic development. VISTA members serve with local nonprofits throughout Ingham County and commit to one year of full-time service.

Amplifying Voices for Public Health:

Our PHA members serve to make a difference for Ingham County community members. While serving at host sites such as NorthWest Initiative and ICHD Maternal Health, members are advancing health for everyone and pushing for positive changes for the health of Ingham County.

Action Starts Here: Championing Resilience for Health
Our environment impacts our physical and mental health. PHA Members organized service projects at Fenner Nature Center and Edgewood Village Network. By taking bold action, together we are creating hope and a clear path forward to support sustainable food systems and conserve Ingham County’s beloved nature spaces.

Very exciting to see this new hoop house ready for the season at our AmeriCorps partner site, Allen Neighborhood Center! Kelsey (pictured far right) is currently serving as a ICHD Public Health AmeriCorps member, Hillary (center jumping) is a 2022-2024 ICHD AmeriCorps alum and Nate (left of Hillary) also served from 2016-2017

We are super excited for our new hoophouse! This project was a great partnership between Allen Neighborhood Center and Greater Lansing Food Bank Garden Project (with technical support from Bendy Stem Farm, Magnolia Farms, and 1991greenery,LLC ).

This hoop house will help us extend our season to grow culturally important food crops to save seed from and distribute back to our neighbors free of cost! Our neighborhood is diverse in every sense of the word, and we're thrilled to expand our capacity to provide produce that reflects our wonderful community 😍

Thank you to everyone who made our 9/11 Day of Service a success!

Last Wednesday, the ICHD AmeriCorps programs partnered with Edgewood Village, the Michigan Community Service Commission, and the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development - MDARD to host a special day of service in honor of the victims of 9/11.

ICHD AmeriCorps members and MDARD staff worked together to repaint a beloved picnic table, build and prep new planter boxes for the community garden, and put together personalized welcome packets for students in the after-school programs at Edgewood Village!

WILX Channel 10 captured some great footage of volunteers, as well as an interview with our very own ICHD AmeriCorps State Program Coordinator, Jalen Bell! Check it out here: https://www.wilx.com/2024/09/11/lansing-area-volunteers-give-back-while-honoring-911-victims/
