Michigan has the opportunity to lead the future of defense innovation and autonomous systems.

At the 2026 Mackinac Policy Conference, leaders highlighted how Michigan’s manufacturing strength, engineering talent, and mobility ecosystem can drive the next generation of defense technology. As Senator Elissa Slotkin said, Michigan remains the “arsenal of democracy” because we know how to build and innovate at scale.

Michigan agencies continue to demonstrate how drone technology can support safer, more effective operations in the field.

During a May 19 stolen vehicle pursuit in St. Clair County, a drone provided continued aerial visibility after the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled into a wooded area, ultimately assisting officers in taking the suspect into custody safely.

May Milestone: Bloomfield Township Public Safety Investment

On May 4, the was awarded a one-time state grant focused on strengthening emergency preparedness efforts across the community. A portion of the funding was shared with the fire department, while the remainder was invested into critical response technology, including new drone technology.

Since the upgrade, Police Chief James Gallagher says the department’s drone is now deployed daily and travels with patrol units. The technology has already assisted officers in active cases, including a recent bank robbery investigation.

This is a powerful example of how drone technology continues to enhance public safety, situational awareness, and emergency response capabilities throughout Michigan.

Public safety remains one of our deepest core sectors, and we’re proud to highlight the departments and organizations helping lead the future of emergency preparedness through innovation.
