The Red Cedar Friends Meeting (the Quaker meeting in the Lansing area) coordinates the Michigan Eyes Wide Open exhibit for the American Friends Service Committee. The exhibit includes a pair of combat boots representing each Michigan military death in Iraq and Afghanistan plus symbolic representations of Iraqi and Afghan civilian deaths. Michigan Eyes Wide Open is available for local Michigan comm
unities to exhibit, along with posters and information witnessing to the human cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The American Friends Service Committee developed the Eyes Wide Open exhibit in 2004 to remind ourselves of the overwhelming human cost of war in Iraq. In 2007 as the number of deaths mounted, this national Eyes Wide Open exhibit was divided into an exhibit for each state. The Red Cedar Friends Meeting houses the Michigan portion of the American Friends Service Committee's Eyes Wide Open exhibit.
