12th South Carolina/4th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Inc.

12th South Carolina/4th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Inc. A few good men remembering, teaching and enjoying the history of our country and people. The 12th South Carolina / 4th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Inc.

was formed in 1988. Our goal has been to recreate an authentic Civil War Infantry Company that portrays both Confederates and Federals on the battlefield, while having fun and enjoying the camaraderie we foster. We were one of the original units to accomplish this in the Midwest region. The Company actively participates in battle re-enactments, living history presentations, school presentations, p

arades, and various other preservation efforts. One of our goals is to educate the public and ourselves about the true history of the Civil War, while making it a very enjoyable experience for our members.

Ending the Season with an anniversary event, the 12th SC portrayed the small but effective 30th Virginia Sharpshooters at the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia.

The battle, a Union victory in which Jubal Early’s small army faced off against Phil Sheridan’s Federals, effectively ended the confederate campaign in the Shenandoah valley and further weakened the war making ability of the Confederacy.

Last weekend, the 12th South Carolina/4th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Inc. and friends from across the country traveled to central Virginia to portray Company H of the 61st Georgia Infantry at the Battle of the Wilderness.

In addition to camping, eating, marching, and fighting near original parts of the Wilderness battlefield, we visited several battlefields in the area, and made a visit to the McGowan’s brigade monument commemorating the 12th South Carolina and the rest of the brigade’s actions at the Bloody Angle of the ”Mule Shoe” at Spotsylvania.

In just over a week, the 12th South Carolina/4th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Inc. will be traveling to central Virginia to participate in the commemoration of the 160th anniversary of the Battle of the Wilderness. The Battle of the Wilderness was the first major engagement of the Overland Campaign of 1864, which saw US Grant and Robert E. Lee command armies against each other for the first time.

It was some of the most brutal fighting of the war, lasting six weeks and resulting in several major battles (many of which the 12th South Carolina and 4th Michigan were heavily engaged in) such as Spotsylvania Courthouse, Jericho Mills, Cold Harbor, and ultimately ending in the Siege of Petersburg, which would last until the very end of the war.

Fighting during this time featured longer battles of attrition, extensive use of breast works and trenches, and heavy campaigning.

This past weekend, members, guests, and some new faces came out to the annual Spring Drill at Charlton park in Hastings.

We portrayed a company of the 12th South Carolina Infantry as they prepared for the spring campaign of 1864, including School of the Soldier, company and battalion drill, and skirmish drill in a more rugged setting.

Next up, the 12th SC will be traveling to Orange/Spotsylvania Counties in Virginia to portray men at the Battle of the Wilderness, which took place 160 years ago in May.
