On our schedule of 51.5 hours a week, this still translates to 14,950 hours or 5.1 extra years worth of 8-hour days over a 25 year career . . .
. . before mandatory off-duty training, and before picking up all the overtime municipalities rely on to avoid shutting down apparatus and stations.

Delta Township has named Eric Arnold as its new Assistant Fire Chief. Arnold joins the Delta Township Fire Department with more than 25 years of experience in the fire service. Chief Arnold has dedicated his career to serving the community, strengthening department operations, and leading firefighters with integrity, accountability, and professionalism.

“I am excited for the opportunity to serve the Delta Township community and become part of an organization that is widely respected for its superior service, expertise, and professionalism,” said Chief Arnold. “I look forward to working alongside Delta’s dedicated fire professionals who make this department a success. I am eager to step into this administrative role, where I hope to provide strategic leadership through an effective, forward-thinking fire department capable of meeting the evolving needs of this community.”

Everyone at the Juneteenth Unity Fest had a chance to meet our tame fire inspector, Mike Ruster!

Non-suppression personnel are widely considered some of the rarest and most reclusive creatures in the fire service.

We will be Filling the Boot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association at several more Delta Township events this year.

This morning, members had the privilege to attend MPFFU's Stewards training conducted by Western Trustee Ken Barnes. They learned about the role of a Union Steward, how to handle grievances professionally, and employees' legal rights under Weingarten, Garrity, and Loudermill.

Eaton County mutual aid party for EMS week this morning!

We've seen Delta and Benton go into Grand Ledge and Windsor come into Delta. At one point, the closest available ambulance in the county was in Charlotte.

With all Delta ambulances out, the number of available firefighters drops from 11 or 12 down to four or five. The remaining five firefighters / two in-service engines spent most of their morning committed to medical first responses.

Mutual aid as a staffing solution is no longer a viable option. Not in an environment where the smaller surrounding departments have also seen their call volumes go up 30-40% over the last decade.

There is "busy" — meaning the taxpayers are getting a great value for their money, and then there is "busy" — on an average day a department can no longer hit national targets for EMS unit availability and response times.
