Black Voters Matter is proud to announce a nationwide simulcast of the documentary Love, Joy & Power: Tools for Liberation, airing June 1 across Black-owned media platforms. This special event aims to educate, empower, and mobilize Black communities at a time when Black political power is facing a coordinated assault. BVM will team up with leading Black-led and owned news programs, The Joy Reid Show and Roland Martin Unfiltered to reach communities directly, channeling the power of the Black media ecosystem.

The simulcast comes on the heels of the All Roads Lead to the South National Day of Action in Selma and Montgomery, where thousands gathered to show their collective power in responding to the onslaught of attacks to silence Black and brown voters. This national response isn’t just about restoring voting rights; it’s about building Black political power. The recent dismantling of key protections in the Voting Rights Act, highlighted by the Louisiana v. Callais decision, only underscores what organizers have long understood: our freedom has never depended solely on the courts. In this critical moment, we must use every tool we have to inspire, mobilize, and activate our communities for the challenges ahead.

Love, Joy & Power: Tools for Liberation directed by Daresha Kyi, follows Cliff Albright, April England-Albright, and LaTosha Brown, co-founders of Black Voters Matter Fund, as they rise from grassroots organizers to national leaders in the fight for Black political power. The film takes viewers aboard the “Blackest Bus in America,” capturing their journey across the country as they mobilize communities ahead of the 2020 election. Set against the backdrop of COVID-19, a national uprising for racial justice, and unprecedented voter suppression, the documentary reveals what grassroots organizing really looks like — the sacrifice, strategy, joy, and unwavering determination needed to move people into action.

Two months after the United Nations resolution declaring slavery one of the most serious crimes against humanity and reaffirming the obligation of states to provide reparations, France is one of the first European countries to open a debate on this issue. Indeed, unlike the vote within the European Union, which voted as a bloc, the French government, through President Emmanuel Macron, has begun in recent weeks to distance itself from its European allies, indicating that the question of reparations is not taboo but that dialogue is possible. It is within this framework that the Élysée Palace is planning an event on May 21st dedicated to this topic. However, this commitment by Emmanuel Macron does not appear to be based on the voices of civil society actors and states that have been demanding reparations for slavery and colonization for decades. Based on discussions with civil society actors from former colonized and enslaved states (Algeria, Haiti, Cameroon) and international organizations ( Amnesty International)(external link)and African Union ECOSOCC(external link)). The challenge of this discussion is therefore to explore the themes that should be at the heart of Emmanuel Macron's reparations agenda.

remembers [El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz] on his 101st birthday. He’s often and intentionally misunderstood and maligned. But Brother Malcolm was a giant of a man, a mystery only to those who don’t really want a sincere look at his heart, history, and hunger for freedom.

"This is what America looks like when it fails to protect its progress: fierce backlash, partisan retrenchment, brass knuckle tactics. Enemies of that progress are clawing back the gains Black and brown communities have made by whatever means necessary.

Instead of poll taxes and literacy tests, we have gerrymandered districts and a process of packing and cracking voters of color. But make no mistake, the goal is the same: dilute the power of Black and brown voters. Shrink the electorate. Ensure the outcome before a single vote is cast.

But although the Supreme Court has diminished our power, it has not extinguished it. Our fundamental right to vote remains — and with it, the most powerful tool a citizen possesses in a democracy. The Voting Rights Act was a product of the halls of Congress, but it was not born there. It was born on a bridge in Selma, Alabama, where the sight of peaceful marchers met with billy clubs and tear gas shocked the conscience of a nation and forced its leaders to act."
