Sometimes showing up isn't easy. Transportation, housing, health, family responsibilities, or other challenges can stand in the way. That's why Communities In Schools works alongside students, families, and schools to remove barriers and ensure every young person has the support they need to succeed.

This Attendance Awareness Month, let's celebrate every step toward showing up, because every day in school opens the door to new possibilities.

At our recent East Lansing Backpack Giveaway, Communities In Schools of Michigan teamed up with fantastic local partners to distribute essential school supplies and backpacks to area students ahead of the new academic year.

Providing wrap-around support and removing basic resource barriers ensures that every student enters the classroom ready to learn on day one.

Students in grades 1–8 from Dearborn and Ypsilanti got the ultimate summer experience at the HAP CareSource Calvin Johnson Impact Camp!

Our students spent the afternoon running football drills, building essential skills, and learning the power of teamwork, perseverance, and healthy living. The highlight of the day? Getting to meet Detroit Lions Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson (“Megatron”), who shared a powerful message with our kids: work hard, believe in yourself, and stay active. 💡💙

Events like this do so much more than teach sports—they show our students that incredible opportunities exist for them both on and off the field.

As the back-to-school season begins, it’s important to remember that each day missed makes it harder for students to keep up, putting graduation and future opportunities at risk.

At Communities In Schools of Michigan, we’re tackling chronic absenteeism head-on. Our trained, caring Student Support Coordinators work inside schools to build relationships and connect students with the resources and support they need to show up and succeed.

Today, we’re celebrating Dolly Parton and the incredible legacy of the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. She believed in a simple but powerful idea: every child deserves the opportunity to grow up with books and a love of reading.

We’re especially proud that Communities In Schools of Michigan has had the opportunity to be a small part of that history here in the Lansing area.

Through an anonymous foundation’s generous support over 10 years ago, CISM helped bring the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to three Lansing-area ZIP codes — 48911, 48915 and 48933 — providing children ages 0–5 with free, high-quality books delivered directly to their homes. Through this effort, hundreds of local children were signed up to receive books at no cost to their families. We then partnered with Child and Family Charities to continue and expand the program.

It’s a beautiful example of what can happen when philanthropy, community partnerships and a big idea come together to support children.

We are honored to have played even a small role in expanding Dolly’s vision of putting books into the hands of children and building brighter futures — one book, one child and one community at a time. ❤️📖

Thank you, Dolly, for imagining a world where every child can have a library of their own. We’re grateful to be a small part of that story.

Community collaboration in action!

The recent WE ROAR Back-to-School Bash at Benton Harbor Area Schools brought together families, local organizations, and committed partners like Delta Dental of Michigan to ensure students start the school year equipped for success. From essential school supplies and enrollment assistance to dental screenings, this event highlighted the critical role wrap-around services play in student achievement.

At Communities In Schools of Michigan, we believe that connecting community resources directly to students creates the foundation for long-term success inside and outside the classroom.

Thank you to all the community leaders and special thanks to Delta Dental who helped set Benton Harbor students up for a great year!
