Part of farming involves making loan payments on time and following regulations. Producers, creditors, and the USDA all have an interest in seeing that these obligations are met. It makes sense, then, to have a method of working together when matters appear out of step. That method is mediation.

In mediation, the participants to a dispute seek solutions that work for all concerned. A trained neutral facilitator builds trust, aids communication and keeps the focus on the issues. The participants make all the decisions within corresponding laws.

With mediation available, a USDA notice or letter can lead the way to collaboration. A hearing can be held if necessary, but all involved may be surprised at what they can accomplish on their own.
