This past weekend, members of the Penn State Great Valley Alumni Society Official took part in the Penn State Homecoming Parade at University Park. While the game didn't end with the outcome we had hoped for, alumni society members, including Michael Koch, enjoyed marching alongside the Chester County Chapter - Penn State Alumni Association and celebrating their Penn State Great Valley pride.

Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm, spirit, and dedication to the Great Valley community. We are grateful for the connections you continue to build and the pride you bring to our campus wherever you go. šŸ’™šŸ¤

A leadership gift from the Perry and Donna Golkin Family Foundation will advance legal education and scholarship at the intersection of law and technology at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School.

The gift serves as a catalyst for Technology, Regulation, AI, and the Law (TRAIL), a new initiative that brings together the Law School’s teaching, research, and experiential learning efforts.

ā€œThe Golkins’ generosity has long played a critical role in strengthening Penn’s leadership in transformative legal education,ā€ said Penn President J. Larry Jameson.

BACK THEN by Pat Rieker

This fine-looking bunch of young men comprised Lansdale’s first organized football team. Under the auspices of the Lansdale Athletic Assn., the team began its inaugural season in September, 1894.

At first, games were played on a field near the Cox Stove Co. on N. Third Ave. (now Cannon Ave.), but the L.A.A. soon purchased a plot of land that later became the athletic field at Memorial Park.

The team practiced after dark with the field illuminated only by moonlight. Games were played on weekends against teams from near and far in eastern Pennsylvania. Players often came away from the game bruised and bloodied due to rough play and the lack of protective equipment. Headgear was nonexistent until 1896, and then it consisted of only 3 leather straps.

These young gladiators must have survived their gridiron days none the worse for wear. A number of them later became business leaders in the community.

The slow, painful death of local newspapers has been under way for many years - more than a century in some respects.
For example, let’s look at the front page of this May 6, 1920 issue of the weekly Lansdale Reporter which was just about as community-oriented as possible. And you can bet every Thursday afternoon people all over town were gobbling up each morsel of news on its four pages.
I urge you to ignore the appearance of this bland page that was typical of the era when photographs were a costly undertaking for small town papers. TAKE THE TIME TO MAGNIFY THE STORIES so you can see what folks were reading and then gossiping about on front porches or across the backyard fence.
Remember, this was a time when radio was in its infancy and TV was decades away. If people wanted national or international news, they waited for the train to bring them one of the Philly papers.
The Reporter was all local, all the time. It was one of the ways folks really got to know their neighbors, something that’s so often missing today.
