is a community center for 18 to 29-year-old gay, bis*xual, and same gender loving men of color. D.E.N.I.M.'s guiding principles:

•Social focus: a successful HIV prevention intervention for young gay/bis*xual men needs to tie HIV risk-reduction to the satisfaction of other needs, such as developing friendships, having fun, and enhancing self-esteem.

•Empowerment philosophy: the project serves a m

obilizing and empowering function with the community as young men take ownership of the project rather than having the project carried out for them

•Peer influence of safer s*x messages: studies show that one’s peers are the most credible sources of information, and peer pressure is one of the most highly effective forms of influence.

•Multi-level approach: self-esteem, interpersonal and cultural issues, internalized homophobia, community norms, and many other factors all influence young men’s risk behavior. Since young gay/bis*xual men engage in unsafe s*x for a variety of reasons, interventions that focus solely on one level of factors will miss men who engage in unsafe s*x for other reasons.

•Gay-positive/s*x-positive: the project enriches and strengthens young gay/bis*xual men’s pride about who they are, and encourages them to explore and celebrate their s*xuality by not just focusing on condom use but by including a wide variety of safer s*x behaviors.

•Community-Building: it is essential to build a community where men support each other about s*xual risk reduction and obtaining HIV testing, where the social norms and expectations support HIV prevention, and where men help each other in coping with the stresses of being gay/bis*xual.

•Diffusion of innovations: community-wide change comes about through a process of informal communication and modeling by peers within their friendship networks.

Our Story

The DENIM Collection recognizes Maslow's hierarchy of needs and that if all of the basic physiological needs are met, then health can be considered, thereby extending far beyond traditional clinical models that only provide primary care services. The DENIM Collection is an innovative care coordination model of culturally-appropriate, co-located clinical, behavioral, and social services for young Black MSM and transgender women, aged 13-34 years, in the Washington, DC area. Consequently, The DENIM Collection is a collection of essential social support and clinical services, such as access to healthy and nutritious foods to combat hunger and food insecurity (DENIM Cupboard) and comprehensive care services that address the whole person (case management, behavioral and mental health), that will result in real change and be a positive community impact for Black MSM and transgender women.
